I've run w/ just a breather cap on it in the past, I'm just wondering why it's there in the first place...there aren't many valve covers out there that fit our cars with the filler tube and breather tube...was going to replace mine..
The stock hose that goes from the inlet to the oil filler is to allow air back into the crankcase. If an open breather is run, it can create a vac leak of sorts (unmetered air).
Huh? Blowby can get recirculated back into the intake, and then sent to the chambers; PCV flow is bi-directional. I am not real sure what you mean.
Now with the above sentiment, if you run with only a PCV valve, but no hose from the intake to the oil filler (or any other means of allowing the crankcase to breathe), that leads to issues. Since the flow is bi-directional, and you can only let air out of the crankcase with a PCV valve, the crankcase can see a vacuum, which is not good. Air can tried to be sucked in through gaskets and seals to remedy this.
Simply stated, I would run a completely closed (a la stock) PCV system, or I would run a standalone breathered set up and omit the PCV. However, the latter is not as effective at scavenging all those vapors out of the crankcase. PCV is an active scavenging, whereas breathers are passive.
Thoughts? (I just woke up, so the noggin aint workin right).
Cool, thanks for the answers, its given me something to think about. I wasn't trying to be smart, I was really unsure of how it happend...I think I'll just repaint the stock covers so I'll have something that works.
