New rings, bearings etc... So, limit rpm to 3000 for the first 1000 miles? Then let 'er rip?

What's your opinion on a break in rule?
 
your rings are going to seal in the first minute or so. the cam is a roller and doesnt need to break in like the old days. As long as it has good oil pressure then if it were me, i'd be nice to it for a few hundred miles, change the oil and cut open the filter to make sure there is no bearing material, and if good let er rip.


what oil are you using? I wouldnt use synthetic until you change the oil the first time.

If there's a problem with a bearing, some mechanical defect, a problem caused by a part mismatch, dont sweat it. just go out and beat the snot out of it until it blows up.

Otherwise, had you Babied it for a couple of hundred miles first, there may have been a chance to save it,..But now there's a big assed hole in the side of the pan rail. But because we went right out andvwailed on it, all of the reckless carnage might have been avoided.

Had you only remembered to tighten this, check that, or listen to anything else otherwise.:rolleyes:

When I built mine, I followed some well known builder's guide. Easy 20 minute drive, running the rpm's up to 3-3.5k and letting the engine pull the car down (not pushing in the clutch). The claim was that it would help seal the rings.

Since then, most I have read says they seat pretty quickly. Probably long before the 20 minute drive is up. I think I did 300 miles before changing the oil to synthetics.

Maybe, maybe not. I don't literally start it up for the first time, and then floor it. But after I've warmed it up, checked for leaks and made sure all fluids are good. It's maiden voyage, I usually get on it pretty good.

For the first 200 or so miles I restrain myself from mashing the go peddle. If it hasn't come apart by then (as Mike said) I beat the crap out of it. My current engine got 50miles of run time then an aftermarket ecu (which I taught myself how to tune :eek: on a fresh engine) within 150miles I was pounding 10psi down its throat.

All of our race engines get 0, Nada, none. We build it, start it to set the carb, break in cam if flat tappet. Then proceed to RACING.
 
I have not taken it for a drive yet. Still gotta put the hood back on and secure/ shield a few things like wiring and hoses. First trip is out of the garage to the driveway for a really good hand wash. It's gotten very dirty sitting in the garage for all this time. Hope the weather doesn't go sub freezing or I'll have to wait it out.

About clutch adjustment, how far off the floor should the pedal come before the clutch begins to engage? I think it's at about 2 or 3 inches now.
