I've started gather parts for a 5 speed swap

The last time I went to the junkyard there were no fox mustangs. I see a couple on Ebay, thank you.

Is there anything low cost I should do to the transmission while it is out? It looks like it is out of a 91.

steel bearing retainer... thats about all unless u want to have it looked at by a shop and see if it needs new snyros etc.. just to make sure u have no problems!

i bought my t5 from ebay.. i got robed! said it worked fine untill i installed it.. 2nd gear snyro was goin out and 3rd geared wined.. still need to get it fixed!

its not hard at all to pull just a pain in the ASS! took me 5hrs to pull and install mine... so like maybe a 2hrs to pull it... also with breaks because it was like 90* outside when i did it

it's a bitch!. the only time I would consider it easy was if you had the dash off. you have to remove the seat so you can lay in the car then drop the steering column and then you can reach the bolts that hold the pedal assembly on.

on a side note, does anyone know where I can get the relay that was attached to the pedal assembly? mine broke off.

I would HIGHLY recommend that you have it checked out before you install it. I bought what was billed as a babied, low-mile T-5 out of an adult-owned 89 Saleen from a friend of a friend who was supposed to be a great guy. He also happens to be a member here and used to own a Mustang shop in southwest Washington. I gave him $450 for the tranny, the bell housing and a Steeda shifter. Thought it was a pretty decent deal. I got it installed and it had an unbelieveable vibration in 4th. I was done f-ing with it, so I took it down to Brad's Custom Auto and had them pull it back out. They tore it down and said that it looked like it had been thrown together with a bunch of leftover parts from other rebuilds. They did it all up nice for me and I ended up spending another $900. I could have bought a brand new one at that point.

See the last line of my sig. Buyer beware.

Unless you plan on beating the holy hell out of the thing (speed-shifting or power-shifting) and/or you're going to be running an ungodly amount of power ahead of it, you might just be better off finding a 4-cylinder T-5 and just using the different pilot bearing. Better 1st gear in those, they're plentiful, and they can be had for dirt-cheap.

Also, don't forget the block seperator plate and flywheel bolts on your list of parts for the swap.

I'm pretty hard on the mustang. I haven't actually bought the transmission yet. It's $500 for the transmission, bell housing, and a Hurst shifter. The poster wrote "no grinding shifts smooth hurst shifter". Do you think I should get out? What does one of those TKO transmissions cost? I don't even know where to look.

Edit:

A quick forums search just returned this company http://www.modularmustangracing.com/. Has anyone had any experience or heard of anything from them? I thought those transmissions cost a lot more. That price is feasible as I was planning on doing this swap more towards spring or summer time.

Uhhh-huh-huh-huh ... you said "hard on"...

FWIW, a TKO tranny will run you over a grand easily in most cases. A Tremec T-5 might be a bit cheaper to grab and still do you well, but being that all you show in your sig is gears and exhaust, I really don't see that you'd even really NEED that much. A stock V8 T-5 should be sufficient. If you've any doubts about a used tranny's condition, you could always buy a rebuild kit for a decent price and throw it in there, yourself, before you go bolting it up under your Fox.

Just bear in mind that most V8 T-5's have likely had the crap beat out of them by their prior owner(s), and there's a lot more power behind that abuse than you'll find being thrown at a 4-banger T-5 tranny. The power rating difference isn't THAT huge between them, and again, behind a stock long block and with 3.73's on street tires, the only thing that will really kill the thing would be if you drove like a psycho with it and never lift off the throttle when you shift, or if you go trying to do 5000 RPM clutch-dumps with slicks.

one of my friends uses a 4 cyl tranny and perfers them over the V8 ones. He power shifts his all the time and beats on it like it ows him money....still shifts smooth with no grinds
his car is an 87 with a B or E cam (cant remember) MAF conversion. explorer intake, gt40 heads, full mac exhaust, 373 gears, 65mm TB. so it lays down decent power

a 4cyl tranny lasted me longer than anyother. The pedal swap isn't to bad. Take the seat out and drop the column. Then there is 4 bolts that hold it to the fire wall. It took me like 2 hour to change them in the notch.
