Progress Thread Jewel Green street/strip 92 LX progress thread

As requested a sound clip. Figured why bother updating thread without sound clip:D. Also did the drivers harness hide with the new MSD 6AL programmable with three rev limiters. I also hooked the factory tach up and found why the high beam indicator didnt work. Still need to calibrate the speedo for the 4.56:1 gears:rolleyes:, I figure it is about 6-8 miles fast at 55mph. I almost have all my list complete that I made in the spring of things to fix this summer.

Not the best video as it was getting dark. But I think you will hear it ok:nice:. Still playing with jetting and timing a bit but runs good so far. I will let you be the judge by the sound. Also I did not mention before this is a Ed Curtis (Flowtech) custom cam ground by Comp. Hopefully the link to the video will work, I can not figure out how to do a direct link to the video.

MY 92 LX :: 9-24-09004.flv video by sshoobridge - Photobucket

I remember hanging out back in the day with the Mustang guys when had the first 5.0 (1990 hatch)... seeing the 'new' green color. Always thought it was beautiful... REALLY beautiful.

So yeah... really nice car there buddy!! I heart the color!! Not boring like white, not typical like black, not ridiculous like red... it's one of the best stock colors to come on a Mustang!!

It was actually a friend's dark green Notch that got me to notice how truly stunning they are... and I wanted to get one in the worst way... a few years later, I did! Don't get me wrong... the hatch was pretty sweet but, there was something about that trunk that made me drool.

This thread is going to be a HUGE help to me while I am putting mine back together. So keep it going!!

Went to a local car show last weekend for kicks and entered the 80-99modified (3 or more modifications) car class. Well apparently the judges liked the car as I figured I had no chance. Third place a 93 black cobra beautiful with drag lite wheels:rolleyes:. Second went to my car:D, and first went to a 88 vert. Apparently the judges liked fox mustangs! I was shocked to say the least.

Also had to cough up the money and buy new boots for the back as I was starting to get cords showing on the old ET streets. Had all the wheels balanced and man what a difference. Before I had a vibration in the fronts as they were not balanced. Oh man this thing hooks hard on the street now, wow what a difference a fresh new tire makes.

Took it to the local grain scale tonight and weighed it. total weight with no driver and 1/4 tank of fuel 2840lbs:nice:. Rear end weight 1280, still front heavy:rolleyes:. I guess this kind of surprised me as I thought it to be a few hundred heavier.

Well it has been awhile, I have been meaning to give an update for a while. Well over the winter did not do too much. Gary Williams went thru the carb, installed a Innovate AF gage, installed a viper car alarm where the old air bag power module was, new 200amp alternator, shift light, hooked the MSD to the clutch switch, rewrapped steering wheel and ultra clear head lights. That was about it.

In May-June ran the car at the local track until I was told don’t come back till I have a steel bell housing. Best at that point was 11.85@ 121mph.
Then decide since I missed NMRA in MI and have been working in IA, to drag the car out too Joliet, IL for the NMRA event in mid July. Ran in the True Street class did the 30 mile cruise and three back to back passes on Sunday. During the test runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning best was a 11.75@122 and at one point ran a 1.59 60ft. I actually slowed the car down in the competition by pulling timing and setting the rev limiter lower so I could be in the 12's. I finished 3rd in the 12.0 class with an average of 12.226 first time in competition and had a great time.

Then took the car out to my apartment in Davenport, IA for a few weeks and ran one Sunday at Cordova, IL ran my best there of [email protected] on July 26th, and that was with a 1.79 60ft. I had found upon routine inspections that I split the lower control arm polly bushing and went and replace all lower control arm bushings. I am thinking that a 4.10 gear will help it hook better for next year, still needs a cage. My goal is high 10s with this NA 331.
After bringing the car back to MI I ordered a set of 17x9 10th anniversary rims and Dunlop 245/45-17 tires.

Have a dyno appointment for September 30th with Lidio at Alternative Auto.

1987LXregtop glad you liked the color; it is not a real common color from going to shows, track and cruises. I get a lot of complement on the color; truthfully I was not crazy about it but have grown to like it.

Cobra912 yes I like the AF gage, I have not figured how to log with a laptop yet but only gave it a try once. I watched your video on your car, does it have a cage? Man that has a lot of flex in the rear of the car. I did at one point run at Joliet a 1.59 60ft which thought that was pretty good for no cage, air bag, and launching at 4600rpm.

Scott

Dyno day at Alternative Auto!

Well started out good...Best was 417.3hp@6600-6800 and 379ft lbs @5200rpm, this was on a dyno jet in 4th gear. Made above 375hp from 5200rpm on up:nice:. My goal was 430:D and realistically thought depending on the dyno and stuff figured 380-430hp would make me happy. So very happy!

Although did not get to play to much as on the run 4 it pooped around 6500rpm, just a puff of raw fuel out of the carb. Well after timing change and restart to reestablish base line Lidio said she is missing, went thru the heat gun and found #3 was stone cold. Come to find out #3 ripped the rocker boss right of the head:mad::nonono::(:notnice::eek:...again. Note this is shaft rockers so im not real happy since this is the second time with the same head, last time was #2 exhaust. I called AFR and they said send them back for evaluation.

So it was making good power and I think she had some more in her just going to wait till I fix her up again:shrug:.

I am almost thinking of ditching the AFR and going twisted wedge but then a rocker and piston change is needed. All I know is the first time is fluke the second there is a serious problem with the casting quality or just not enough meat around the boss.

pictures to follow shortly...

I really dont get much feedback in this thread:(..maybe I should join harcore5.0, there are a lot more guys running a simular setup then over here that can relate...

that really sucks about those heads, ive never seen anything like that, mabye you just got a bad casting or something. Did you make any headway on the cage? and have you ever scaled the car?

I think if I deciphered the date code right they are 2000 vintage heads. I really think there is something wrong with the casting.

I do have a 1/4" plate under each stand to make the rocker sit higher to get the geometry correct. Don’t know if that is a factor or not? I also wish that I made all the 1/4 plates together from one end to the other that would have given more support to each boss.

I will post on Hardcore and maybe over on speedtalk as well to see if I can get any feedback.

Car weight is right around 3000 with quarter tank fuel and with me in it. Joliet, IL was 3040 but I think I had closer to half tank of fuel maybe even more.

Scott

I haven't heard of a boss failing like that twice in a row. My guess just from an engineering standpoint is that you got a bad casting or there's another factor that hasn't been revealed yet that's putting undue stress on that particular area. What has AFR said about the failure?

Well it broke before with the other rockers so id say you can rule that one out.

And how the hell is your car so light my car is 2980 without me

Since the last time it broke the whole valve train was changed, cam, lifters, pushrods, rockers, keepers, springs, retainers...added lash caps.

AFR will not say much until I send them the heads for evaluation.

weight NO CAGE! My goal is to keep the same weight when I do cage her. So weight will be removed from front brakes, anything that is under the dash that is no longer needed, inside the doors although that may already be done.

Scott

I would definitly send them in, since the castings are so old, mabye they will offer you a newer head for really cheap, that would definitly be the right thing to do
