JLT + Tune = Pinging?

Well tonight I was cruising home after picking up the G/F and I decided to punch it on a back road. It was dark and quiet so I could focus on the car and I noticed that at WOT past 4K I heard a slight rattling in the engine like pinging. Now I'm running Bamachips 93 octane race tune and a JLT II Intake. I've been running this for about a month and never noticed it before but conditions tonight (dark quiet) perhaps helped me focus on "unusual sounds". I did just fill the car up but it was Shell V-Power, and the temperature was in the 50's which is lower then the 80's and 70's I've been driving with.

Dunno what to do at this point I'm kinda apprehensive to repeat the experiment before I break something.

Any ideas?

yeah, i think mine does it to but i dont have a tune or anything. it seems to only do it if its cold outside and the engine isnt warm and i punch it. i dont know if its pinging because ive never heard pinging

I advise against punching it when your engine isn't warmed up, that's the fastest way to crack your block.

I dunno I think i'll have to work up the nerve to try it again to isolate the sound, it may be that its coming from the tranny but it sure sounded like pinging to me.

Well I got on it again and it started doing it again. Thing is shouldn't the car retard timing if some bad pinging was happening? isn't that what knock sensors are for? I'm not getting any performance loss the car just flies through the RPMs, only it sounds kinda bad. I did try putting my hand on the shifter and holding it tightly and it SEEMED to be a little more muffled but like i said it was more of an impression then anything.

I'm at a loss here, but i really don't want to hurt the engine.

It will only retard the timing X amount of degrees as per the factory programing. If you have a tune the timing is advanced beyond factory so the computer will not be able to retard it enough. My flash tuner left the program unlocked so I was able to hook up my SCT after a test run and adjust the timing in certain RPM ranges and the fuel at WOT and it cured the pinging in about 3 test tunes. :flag:

Sounds to me like the cooler more dense air is causing a lean condition. DO NOT let it continue. You should contact the people that supplied your tune and have them knock a degree off the timing or adjust the fuel tables.

Crappo!!! I just uploaded the 87 tune and voila` no more pinging....

Sounds like gas around here is lower quality then in Bama.

Fortunately Doug sent me free of charge a 93 race tune which is a little less aggressive then his other one so I'll try that out and see if I get the power without the ping. So far tho I'm liking the 87 running on 93 octane gas seems more powerful but that's probably a product of the detonation I was getting.

Morale of the story is Doug is a great guy that will bend backwards for you if you have some kind of problem. I definitely recommend his services!
