Just finished Comp Cam 270H install

I finished the install last week but didnt get a chance to break it in until today.

after the break-in I decieded to give it a short test drive around the block and damn the car sounds nice , it has great lopey sound.

I havent finished really tunning it yet, but it feels like I have a lot more power when I floor it

I just cant believe how much this cam swap changed the characteristic of my car, it sounds mean and runs awesome. Also the install wasnt too hard although I did have some problems (thanks to the guys that helped me).

all in all I am satisfed with my new cam and highly recommend the 270H cam to anyone.

where do you think it makes peak power (if you have a tach)?

since I havent tuned it perfectly my answer may not be truly accurate but here are my impressions:

1) the car does seem to have lost some of its low end torque, it dosent break the rear end lose like before (but it does chirp the tires between shifts).

2)however the new cam more than makes up for its small loss of low end torque with a great mid-range pull all the way up to 4.5k rpm. The previous cam lost steam around 3.5K rpm. (My engine right now shifts at 4.5K rpm, I have to adjust my vaccum modualtor to get it to shift at 5 or 5.5K rpm)

3) I would have to say peak power would be somewhere around 3-4.5k rpm. I need to go drive the car again before I can really narrow down where it makes peak power.

4) Even though the car is not tuned yet, the cam seems to have added some civility to it. Before the car would accelerate hard from 0-40mph, then from 40-80 mph it would lose steam. And from 80 mph and above it really fell dead. The new cam accelerates great and feels faster all the way up to 100mph (thats the fastest I went on the freeway today) and still seemed to have a lot left in it.

The 270H is a great cam. Try advancing your base timing a bit (watch for ping). I've helped tune a car with that cam and it likes alot of initial timing around 12-16 degrees. Bottom end picked up a bunch!!!

I know it is a real street screamer in a small block. The 351 should tame it a little with the extra cubes.

BTW:
If you have the inclination to experiment... try a Stealth intake.
That cam has more top end potential beyond what the Performer can handle.

What valve springs are you running? The reason I ask is that this cam is about the outer limits of what press in studs can take. Keep an ear out for valve train clatter. You won't damage your engine so much if one pulls out, but if you're running at 5500rpm with stiff springs, one will pull out eventually.

I see some experts with the CompCams series here. My grind was sold to me by DSS as a "custom grind", I found the exact one in the catalog from Comp. It is part number 276AH-10. Any opinions on that?

and while you're at it, i'm looking at a cam that will pair perfectly to a stealth intake, been looking at the 274XE and 280H, but I don't want a really aggressive stall. Any comments?
