Just the E-cam idle or a problem?

I just finished my H/C/I project and fired it up for the first time tonight. I tried to set the idle at 650 and it really didn't want to idle there. I set it about 850 and it idled quite well there. After getting the timing (14*) and fuel pressure (40 psi) set I took it for a spin and WOW, the thing runs like a raped ape! My only concern is the idle quality in drive. It's not threatening to die or anything, but it is very lumpy. I did a search and found some references to lumpy idle with the E-cam, but to what extent? Is this just the idle of the E-cam, or should I go looking for a vacuum leak somewhere?

I have an e-cam in my 95 and it idles bad. I have my idle set at 1000rpm in park right now and a tad less in gear.

If I set it around 600-700 it is very rough.

With your 3.73s I bet it feels really nice. With my stock 3.27 gears it sucks. I don't have much power from idle to 2500rpm.

I had a 91 GT with GT40 irons Cobra intake and E-303 with an AOD. The car was very lumpy. I loved the way it sounded, it turned heads everywhere!! Mine idled at about 850-1000. It would sometimes die when I put it into gear, but not always. Anyways, it did run and drive excellent with that cam. I would say that you DO NOT have a problem:nice:

SVT...what gears did you have? They claim the e-cam has good low end but mine sucks. I can barely get more than a squeek out of the tires from a dead stop. Then it starts to pickup at 2500 and sometimes breaks loose alittle more.

my car idles fine at 700-750rpm but it's manual, so there is going to be a difference. It's lumpy, but a good lumpy. i have my timing at 16* with the gt-40x-e cam crate motor, which was suggested(16-20*) by a ford racing tech.

I could probably bump my timing up more. Since I do run 93 octane exclusively. Are your GT40 heads alluminum or iron?

I am getting no knocking/pinging now so I may try a couple more degrees of timing.

I had 4.10 in there. It was like that when I bought it. It was horrible. THE AOD shifted great into 2nd, but awful into 3rd...4700RPM. Then it would not shift into 4th unless I let off the gas. The car however would fly when I did the "AOD Shuffle". I did it all the time, and nothing broke, but most people say that will kill the trans, maybe I just got lucky!

with a cam u really need to adjust the idle.

i had mine adjusted to around 750 and it was great!

i messed with and i jacked it up and its at like 600

when i start the car when the engine is cool

it cant idle by itself at all until like 5 mins pass.

cams usually bring a more erratic idle. <_<

I have an e-cam in my 5 speed and I set my idle higher than normal. I have an e-fan, and when the fan would come on it would really make the idle surge...until I did some adjustments.

I drove the car until normal temp, then unplugged the IAC, adjusted the idle screw and set it at 1000rpms. Then I used a voltmeter and adjusted my TPS. Positive probe on the green wire, negative probe on the black wire, and adjusted my TPS until it read between .99v and .98v at idle. I also have the vac line to my EGR blocked off.

Now my car idles at 1000rpms, doesn't stumble, surge, sounds great, drives like a dream. I had a lot of surging issues and stumble issues before the adjustments, now it drives perfectly.
