keep the old girl or trade in?

like the title says.
i have a 2000 GT Vert with some mods. she runs great and looks even better. she has 85k so not to sure if to S/C this engine, but im stuck between moding the hell out of this one or getting a 03-04 Cobra. i only have 1.5 years of payments left, and was planning to carry the payment to a savings for a hole new motor and S/C. but that leaves me with trying to get it smoged some how and obviously it wont pass cali . but with a cobra and only a few mods im up around the HP i want to have (for now) and still be smog legal.
whats your recommendations? should i keep her and mod her up? remember smog issues, or get a create engine and pay to have them switch when its time to smog. or Cobra and be done with it?

id say, get a crate engine, and switch it when smog time comes... its not too hard once youve had it out once or twice.. the first few times youlll be slow, but after that its all butter...

IMO... making a GT run fast is way better/deserves more credit than buying a cobra and a pulley .. just my .02.. but i know i'm way more impressed by a car if there has been some work put into it, not just buying a fast car..

either that, or just get the new motor/sc, and take it somewhere and have a multiple tune chip made, i'm not sure how cali emmissions testing works, but couldnt you just de tune the piss out of it and have it pass??

depends on your ulimate goal. I say cobra.....you have better seats, limited production, better resale, upgraded fuel system, better suspension, factory built motor already able to handle 700rwhp easily WITH a warrenty.

I'd just trade for the cobra...remember, more mods (typically) = more problems in reliability

Even with a really good tune you have to keep in mind that the more stuff you play with in the engine, the more chances you create for something to go wrong. Good luck!

Cobra, getting more credit cuz it is harder is nice and all, but who cares?? Get the car that you really love. Try out a cobra and if you like it better than yours, then there is no more to it

It's all going to come down to the numbers game. If you're GT is nearly paid off then modding it wouldn't be that bad, but if the difference between beefing up and modding your GT, along with it's resale value are even remotely close to cost of a turn key used ’03-’04 Cobra (which I’m 100% sure it will be), then the Cobra would be the smarter choice. For the reasons that streetstang03 stated alone!

Had a lot of these seemingly “Anti-Cobra” posters been able to afford a Cobra to begin with, you can bet that they wouldn’t be talking down to a Cobra owner for “just doing a pulley swap” when the GT’s have to spend thousands and thousands more, just to be on par with the Snake in the power dept….and then after all is said and done, they’re still driving a lesser car! Just do your best to weed through the Cobra envy and make your decision based on what makes more sense to you.

good jab ... but actually that is KINDA the reason i got the 96.. i was looking to get a 4.6 stang.. and the only 2 available at the time were this one, and a 00 GT, wich was roughly 8000 more, i got the 96 cuz its sure not going to cost me 8g's to do a headswap.. also i like this body style better

and i didnt even look at cobras, i'm not a fan of the 4v for the reason that i like modding the car myself, and having to buy 4 cams = , and after seeing what T&J can do with a 2v, i was sold

my old GT was a 97 I loved that car theres a place in my heart for both body styles. Oh...and a PI swapped 96-98 usually is slightly faster than a stock 99+ GT

Yeah, to tell you the truth, I like the 96-98 body style better myself. So much in fact, that Although I dnow that the '03-'04 Cobra has it over an earlier model in every respect, I'd actually spend a pile of money on a '96-'98 Cobra and bring it's power up to par with the '03. Which, if you do it by the numbers, doesn't make sense. Like I said, it's all in what you like.
