kind of disappointed

Well I finally got new gears in the car and they are great, definately not disappointed in those at all! I got 3.73's so that might be looked down apon by a few but they are what I need. I was a little upset at the numbers though the car pulled on the dyno. I got a total of 3 pulls:
1st without gears and with SCT chip: 255 HP and 297 TQ
2nd pull with 3.73's and SCT chip: 253 HP and 285 TQ
3rd pull with 3.73's and a handheld SCT: 256 HP 289 TQ

I thought those seemed a bit low as I was thinking I should get closer to 280. Is this right where I should be with my mods? I have heard the tuning shop I went to is a bit mild on their tunes but I would rather not be sitting on a timebomb so if I give up 20 or so HP for a safe ride that beats not having a car at all.. Any ideas? What else could I do to get me to 300 which is where I want to be?

Should be a lot higher. I pulled 245 at the wheels with just basically a CAI, O/R H, catback, and a tune.....through an automatic.

I think your tune is holding you back.

Kind of my thoughts as well.. I think as a tuner they want it to be 'safe' which means not pushing it. They told me I could change air/fuel if I wanted which I might look into doing. Might also contact AM and see if they could write a better tune maybe.

If nothing else they do a look over on the car when its on the lift and saw something I heard but never could pinpoint what it was. I knew my bushings up front were shot and I thought it was that but my headers were rubbing on something! Cant think of the name of it but the part is off now.. Damn thing was cutting into that part good though! If I had let it go longer it might have put a hole in my header and I am betting the metal might be a tad bit thinner in that spot:nonono:

2v's don't get close to 300rwhp without cams or headwork. About 6-8 years ago, 2v's started to get in to the 300rwhp area on stock PI heads with cams. Most cars see 290-300rwhp with cams, some a little higher on other boards. I put down 264rwhp with no tune and stock headers on my pi swapped 98gt.

I wouldn't be upset in dyno numbers. See what the car traps before and after your numbers and record the DA, 60ft, shift points etc. A lot of people get way too caught up in dyno numbers.

Your gears won't really affect your hp numbers at your power level, they might slightly hurt your hp figure but I doubt it. If you had your car tuned by them, they should have done a nice 1-2 hour street tune in different driving conditions, and then 5-6 pulls on the dyno. Handheld tuners can not compete with a "hand's on" tuner.

Not quite sure I am following you 100% Winters but we just used the SCT tuner on it and tweaked it a bit. I was thinking that cams and a lower intake would get me to 300 or close to it but those will cost close to $1500 so I don't think its the smartest thing for me personally. I enjoy driving it so maybe I might be done with it

You think thats bad...

My car only made 233rwhp with a custom dyno tune! CAI, plenum, TB, pulleys, shorty headers, catted mid pipe, cat back. Its an auto with 4.10s.
I dont know how much the gears can drop your dyno numbers.... The SOTP is way better than stock.

1500 bucks for cams and intake?
I'm thinking you are thinking custom fabbed intake w/a really aggresive cam.

You can find some streetable cams for like 400 and a lower intake for the same. For your price you might as well get a used Centri blower. That will definantly put you over 300 to the wheels.

All the dynos around here save one would show that car at 235-249RWHP given your mod list.

The one oddball would show 250-260RWHP before you "tweek" it to whatever number you really want on the printout................

I agree with winters, with not getting upset with dyno numbers and see what that thing does at the track. I think people get way too caught up in them. If this makes you feel better my car made 277 hp and was beating 400 hp in the 1320. Of course being able to say you have 300, 400 hp is cool but its how you drive it!

I could look and find a good deal maybe on ebay or elsewhere but I was pricing new typhoon intake and some comp cams from american muscle. Comp cams are 600 and the intake is 540 so its only 1140 but that is still alot for not a huge gain.

Thanks guys for helping me see the other side of things, I have yet to drive it like I stole it since I just got the gears done yesterday but when that time comes my opinion could change.

Do not waste your time on the typhoon, as mentioned above. The logan is going to be big bucks, if I remember correctly from years ago since it is hand welded. Just use the PI intake and a nice set of custom cams.

You need to get a set of valvesprings with cams as well. You might get away with the stock ones for somebody's stage 1, or comp 262's, but I would never run aftermarket cams without springs.

Yea the logan is a great piece but it was 1400 I believe on their site... what type of gains can be had by cams? I know the best gain is throughout the powerband but is that it?

This is a pretty decent write up (it compares stock PI cams to "stage 1" and "stage 3" cams)
Comp Cams Ford Mustang Two-Valve Install - Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Magazine

Also here on stangnet is a decent talk about hitech cams
http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/764548-hitech-stage-ii-cams.html

Overall read the above and think about what you want. The hitech stage II's are a pretty popular cam and have the upsides of a stage I (don't need springs or gears) but with the gains of a stage II. (i may be biased, hitech stage II's are my next potential mod- wife might buy them for my christmas present :D )

The gains from an intake are pretty minimal for NA cars. If you are doing nitrous or FI it is a different story. :flag:

235rwhp with his mods list????? 235rwhp is bone stock 2V territory

Thats what we see around here on the 5+ dynos we have to choose from. I live in tuner country, SCT, Sniper, Superchips are all located within a few miles. I used to work for one of the above and deal with one of the others a ton. One thing I have learned is that many many many dynos are giving numbers on the higher side be it out of calibration or purposely done.

7 years ago a stock longblock 2V with cams, longtubes, and a Bullitt intake made 268RWHP but ran 11.98@113MPH with a weight of 3150lbs. It still holds the NA 2V stock longblock record BTW. For some reason there are tons of 300+RWHP 2V according to other dynos around the country but they have trouble getting into the low 12's at the same weight.
