Accurate except boy is a middle aged man, possibly having a semi mid life crisis wanting to relive his days past, still ends up broke in the end. lol can’t put a price on smiles per gallon tho!

Tried to check my timing today. Need to paint pen the marks on my balancer or something, I couldn’t see 
for timing marks. I also did it out in the sun so it was bright, so I’m sure that didn’t help.

Oh I got every color of the rainbow of crayons, markers, paint, playdoh, etc etc. The reason I have all that stuff is also the reason every small project takes me a month to complete.
On a real note does yellow crayon work well? Or were you just joking around? I also have a shiny silver paint pen I use to write mileage/date on my oil filters.
In that case, you better keep a close eye on that kid.
Maybe put a web cam on your crayons.
I've watched videos and people mark 10* and then like 14* (or wherever you want your timing advance) and set it like in the middle. Or is that a dumb way to go about it?
For now i'm just trying to check what its at now, but i'd like to bump it to 12* or so once i know my baseline.

Ah, life can be so frustrating sometimes. Decided to try to tackle my 255lph fuel pump assembly and fuel sending unit this morning since my wife took our kid to the farmers market.
Of course things don’t go as planned. The sending unit was actually pretty easy. Got that in pretty quickly. Mind you, I started this job just lowering the drivers side of the tank down and not completely removing the entire tank.
Anyways, with that set up I got the old fuel pump assembly out, and actually got the new one in but just couldn’t get it to sit flush in the opening no matter how I tried. Got frustrated and started to remove it just to ‘start over’. Noticed the positive wire just sheered off (so thankfully I ‘started over’, or else I never would’ve noticed that). So at that point I knew everything had to come out and I had to fix the wire. Of course, when removing the assembly the filter popped off. No biggie I would just fish it out with some long needle nose pliers. Nope, filter is no where to be found.
So I remove the entire tank, set it on a rolling cart just to get it out of the way and so my neighbors don’t see a gas tank just chillin. I literally cannot see the filter looking from the top or the filler neck hole. Murphys law, I can’t find my super bright flash light, of course. It’s super bright outside which makes looking in the holes that much harder.
Here’s where I’m at lol
And here’s another damaged wire upon inspection (after I fixed the red wire). Both must’ve got cut when spinning the assembly around multiple times trying to get it in:
So now I’m just gonna order a new pigtail and start fresh with the wiring. Two damaged wires with patchwork fixes doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzy.
Any tips on looking for the filter? For some reason I thought it would float but I think it’s sunk and is chillin somewhere in the back of the tank. There is fuel in the tank but I ran it down to like an 1/8th tank knowing it would help make the job easier.
At this point my family returned and my kid started poking around, and with exposed fuel lines and such I decided to call it a day until she’s not around to ‘get in the way’. She’s not quite at the age where I could teach her what’s I’m doing (although maybe I wouldn’t be the best teacher with how things are going lol)

Also, any worry leaving the tank as is for a week or so until the new pigtail comes in from LMR? I have the openings stuffed with paper towels and will put a garbage bag over that end so it doesn’t get wet from the marine layer every morning, or if it rains.
One positive is now I can clean up the tank exterior really well. Got to remain positive!

Ya that ended up being kinda wobbly and with some of the wind we get, I decided to put it on some metal saw horses I have, much more stable.
I ordered the new pump pigtail, stator wire pigtail and a new overflow tank cause mine was looking extra gross last time I looked down inside it.

Sock filter will sink to the bottom. Tilt the tank up so the filler neck end is the lowest. There is a baffle that the sock filter and bottom of the pump sits in so that when the tank is low on fuel it doesn’t slosh and starve the pump. My guess is you will have to fish the filter from around that.
Bummer cause I can’t tilt the tank too much without gas coming out of the filler neck hole. I’ll figure it out somehow. Guess I could drain gas into a bucket or something.
Since you wanted to spruce up the tank anyhow... Drain it.

Got my new pigtail… had a go at soldering the two wires together. Watched some YouTube videos on soldering… placed my solder gun underneath the wires, got them hot enough to melt the solder above the wires but the solder didn’t like ‘sink’ into the wires like in the YouTube videos, it just made like a mound of solder on top of the wires.
Then I couldn’t get the wires hot enough again to melt the solder even though I just did what I previously did. Lol
So anyways, cut that mess out and was just gonna butt crimp them together like the directions say anyways, and ran out of heat shrink large enough to fit over the butt connectors. So ordered more heat shrink and will finish the job tomorrow.
Im getting dangerously close to running out of usable wire on the pump assembly side though.

As for the issues you had above, it sounds like your iron is not hot enough.
I have a 60W Pen iron that I use for small work and a 120W with a half-decent stand for heavier stuff.
