Larger Mass Air Flow?

I have a stock '03 GT 5 speed other than the things in my signature. I am thinking about getting a cold air intake. Is there any advantage putting a larger mass air flow on a stock GT? What size and brand would be best for a stock GT without changing the computer program or injectors? Sorry for the stupid questions, but I do not totally understand what a larger mass air flow does. I have been looking at the BBK and the WMS. The WMS comes with a larger mass airflow, but is kind of pricey. The only other mods that I am considering are a different computer chip and a Tri axe shifter after the TSB comes out on the 3650 trans and I get mine fixed. I will probably do more after I run out of warranty.

Thanks,

larger mass air flow meter

Ifyou car is normaly aspriated or is going to stay that way I do not recomend switching mafs there is no avantage to it since your factory maf is 85 mm.
The deal with the larger 90 mm lightning mafs is that they can see more airflow because of there electronics. I think that you stock mass air meter can see 56 or mabey 46# of airflow max. Most modifyied engines will not see beyond 35# of airflow normaly aspriated. The earlier 70 mm mafs like came stock on my tbird and mustangs had a large bar that was very restrictive but the newer ones from ford are not.

I don't think it would benefit you if you installed a new MAF without getting your computer modified. Kenne Bell actually goes into depth about MAF's. Check it out on their site. kennebell.net

If you're contemplating a chip in the future, leave the MAFS alone. Go with a fordchip.com or SCT chip. They'll retune using your stock MAFS, which BTW is 80 mm, not 85. The only difference from the 2001 MAFS is the centerpost has been practically eliminated and the temp sensor is incorporated. The barrel diameter is the same.

does anyone know what size maf the 98 gts have? ive looked but arent able to find anything.

MAF's are a decent MOD if you are staying NA. I went with a C & L with Tru-flow pipe and I noticed decent SOP gains (gains I could feel). I have heard some say that should only go with a MAF if you are not going to get a tune because C & L's are hard to tune. I don't buy it. Any good tuner will be able to tune your car.
MAF's help you gain about 10RWHP by slightly leaning out your AF (still within a safe margin) and less so by increasing air flow (reduced restriction).
Many of the problems with AF and idle, etc are due to flawed installations. When I first installed my C & L, the car could not "find" an idle. I went to the website and found that I needed to rotate the MAF clockwise to the 1:00 position and VOILA, problems solved.
The MAF can be a good mod depending on what you want. If you are staying NA... go for it.

there are better mods than a MAF that you still can do. look at my mods in my sig and pic one out. any midpipe is a better mod than a C&L, subframes(which i need), pullies and a TA instead of a chip, or some gears.
