Largest rear 17" tires on 95 GT - REAR?

I currently run 245/45/17 on 17x8" rims all the way around. It looks good, but can't help but think a wider tire out the back would be better.

What is the widest tire I can put on that won't rub and still utilize the 17x8" rim?

I ran a 275/40/17 for a while... looks much better but you have to be careful with yoru tire pressure... I ran one a couple psi too high and wore out the center of the tire in short order...

I was thinking about replacing the rears with 17x9" wheels with 275/40/17 tires. My concern is that they will rub or be close to shock or exhaust tailpipes.

I guess as long as the rims have the correct offset, they should be fine?

I ran 315s on 10.5s without any problems with exhaust or quad shocks. Some tires run wider though.

I currently run 265 35 18s at all four corners on 9 inch wide wheels but now that the cars up for the winter, I sold the rear wheels and Im buying 18x10s with some BF goodrich 295 35 18s. Ive seen some people with 305s as well as 295s that run with no issues whatsoever. Like you said, the backspacing is important. Read right over the 17x8 part. That limits your options for how wide you can go but I think you could go 265 with no issues. Im sure more people will chime in.

I think someone here had some 335's on the rear, but I think they were a brand that runs on the narrow side (some Nitto's maybe?). You can usually get away with 315's on the rear if you flip, or remove the quad shocks. My 285's are awfully close to the tailpipes.

Im running 285's on a 10.5" right now, and 315's will fit on a 10.5" wheel with a little kiss from a hammer to the inner well. My 285 BFG's rubbed when turning into places with elevation changes just a little. Tapped the inner well and no more rub.

10.5 with a 315 - no issues

dont forget that a 1/4" or 1/2" spacer will go a long way to avoid clearance issues

You can run 10.5 inch rims with 315s on the back with no issues at all. I did this with both Sumitimotos (crappy) and Mickey Thompson Drag Radials (awesome). The only catch is, you have to run a stock suspension. The 4x4 looking setup is very forgiving when putting large tires on. Flipping the quad shocks is super easy and will get you a little more clearance if you need it with a dropped car.

Yeah unless the car is lowered at all, and then you can have contact issues with the quarter panel.

Seems like the 17x9 with 275s clear 99% of the time. This also will allow you to choose from many brands and models of tires.

17x10.5 wheels with the 315s are always a close fit, so it's 50/50 as to whether you'll need to make a minor adjustment. Tire selection is extremely limited with 315s.

I've been tossing this idea and will probably go with 275s on all four with 17x9 wheels to get the most in tire selection and prevent rubbing issues from lowering.

I'm just getting done with my escapades in tire swapping.

I started with 245x45x17 all the way around (Sumitomo HTRZII+) on the stock 98GT rims, then went to a Nitto 555R Drag tire on the back 275x40x17, then swapped rims for some 9"/10.5" 03 Cobra rims and went 275x40x17 up front (P Zero Nero) and 315x40x17 Sumitomo's out back. That lasted for a couple weeks and I finally switched the rears back to Nitto 555R Drag tires (315x40x17) to get some traction back.

I buy whatever used tires I can find for the street. I think I have had the same tires on my car now for 3 years, and I bought all 4 used for like $150.

Does anyone have any pics of their cars with 17x10.5's or 17x9's" with 275\40\17 or 315's??

I'd like to see how they fit if someone could oblige. I was gonna go with 17x10.5 cobra R's in the rear with 315's but it sound like tire choice is limited??

Any help is appreciated...
