Launching with 373/410's on street tires..

I know gears are a must.. but..


i have a feeling that i'm beating alot of stangs over is becasue there just not getting any traction.. i have stock gears (2.XX?) and i quickly (not dump) the clutch at about 1300-1700 RPM.. I get a quick squeek, then pin the gas, chirp(slight spin if i power shift) in 2nd, and then after that it's all motor.... i have it down pat

how do u guys launch with higher gears? (or how would u with my car, look at sig) I'm assuming i would not give full throttle all through out first?

after some practice, will i definitly be able to be faster with 373's on street tires? I know many of you will say yes, but i am really beating alot of these modded mustangs around here

No question with gears you will be even faster, no doubt if
you already winning, more power to ya. Launch Rpm's differ
like you say you want traction, some cars get better traction.
With better traction you can launch with higher rpm's which
would be an advantage obviously.

i launch at idle and half throttle through first geat and i granny shift second and try to give it gas with out spinning to much, and give it hell in third

if i didnt have the nitto drags, i would be all over the place on the street

If they are useing slicks they really dont have to worry to much about spinning.

thats the thing though, i wouldn't want slicks on my car... it's a daily driver... but i'm sure after a couple runs i'll get it down

I beg to differ. When I had 3.08 gears I was running 8.8 in the 1/8 mile. The best I could do with the 3.73 was a 9.0

I may be wrong but maybe it is not the gears.
In general gears should improve your times.
I bet there are more that improved than did not.
Hopefullyit will be proven here.

Gears will ALWAYS help given you have decent tires and a properly functioning posi. It just takes practice to properly launch the car. A ridiculous amount of people just dump the clutch and peg the gas out of the hole and wonder why a car with stock gears thumps them; it's all in the launch technique.

With the 4.10's in my coupe, I do the following:

Bring the engine up to 3000 rpms. When I take off, I slip the clutch and get moving, once moving, and I can just sort of 'feel' the car grab, I dump the clutch, mash the gas, and leave it pinned to the floor while I grab second, third, and fourth.

I have to really walk the car out of the hole, but once it's moving, she goes QUICK. If you put 3.73's or 4.10's in your car, you will have a constant case of permagrin when you launch it.

Well most people do gears first so I would be the exception to the norm. Once you reach a certain power level then all gears do is produce more wheel spin. My 60ft time with 3.08 were concistent 2.05. I have a hard time doing better than a 2.2 with the 3.73. I know if I put slicks on the car the 3.73 would be alot faster, but most mildly upgraded mustangs don't run slicks at the track. I had a eaton locker and mossier axles installed with my gear so I think its highly unlikely that it is a problem with my locker.

how was your 1/4 mile times stock vs 373? did 3rd and 4th make up for the spinning?

Well on the street, launching is basically not even launching.... just pedal the clutch a little b/c if you peg it or raise the RPM you spin ... no two ways about it.... with 2.73's "launching" on the street was more feasible but you still would only rev it to like 2300 max & it would spin a hair then bite.

I may be the exception to the rule here but my car does 1 of 3 things
Bogs
Spins
Smokes the clutch

hehe i ran my time just by easing in on the gas but my time definitely increased with gears once i learned how to launch all over a freakin' again.
BTW that was a 2.08 60' time on the 93 and the extra 200 lbs probably didn't help the 1/4 mile time or mph. I wish i would have just had enough money left over to buy some drag radials.
