leaky power rack, any of those seal conditioners actually work?

i was curious to see if anyone here have used andthing to stop the leaking in there power steering racks. i have heard no leak (or stop leak or sumtin like that) works. but the store near me has something made by gunk. there is also a container the looks like 2 fluids that are separated but mix together when you put them in the system ( there is also one like this for auto matic transmissions- if anyone has used it let me kno).

any idea on any of these? do i really have to get a new rack? it will probably only be a temporary fix (6 onths).

Where is it leaking from? You might have a bad boot or a seal on one of the hoses. Check it out thoroughly and try and avoid using stop leak. Fix it right the first time.

the driver side seal (on the inner tie rod) the lines seal just fine.i just replaced the boots (driver side was torn) im not sure how bad the leak is, but it didnt look to bad but enough to make a mess and i jsut need it fixed for a little while and i really miss power steering. i like the one finger turns lol. stang22... now im not saying im a hack mechanic, but ive seen your car (and im jealous) but i just want it fixed for a while.. its not apermanant thing... so im going the cheap way... not the right way lol

I have heard of that stop leak stuff, never used it, but not sure if they make some for power steering. I would start the car up and have someone turn the wheel to see if you can find the leak. Good luck!

i used the lucas oil version on a toyota with 225,000 miles. It worked great and stopped the leak. It was a pretty decent leak too.

In my old beater, I tried a few things, the Lucas was the only thing that did the job, cut off all noise and leaking, for a few months then I had to get more and do it again, replaced the pump after that.

What I am saying is things like that might work tempary, but won't actually "fix" the problem. Check the autoparts store, a rebuilt rack might not cost that much, or at least be better than the headach of leak - fix - leak - fix....

i'm glad you guys have had luck with stop leak stuff...i ended up just having to get all new hardware(pump, lines, rack)-but after 160k miles, it needed it anyway

im getting my neighbors (no leaking) rack when he puts in his new one... but thats gunna be a few weeks/months b/c hes rationing his projects lol... he wants soemthing to do incease he runs out of money and cant buy somthing... sundays are reserved for mustangs around me (except during fb season)

the rack for your 'stang should only be about $100 for a reman from one of the local auto parts stores-i think i paid $80 for my '84...if you've got $300 to throw around, there's a place on ebay that sells a manual rack kit (rack, shaft, tie rod ends). it took me and a friend of mine about three hours to install followed by a stop at the local firestone for an alignment...

bottom line, you're options are open-if you're short on greenbacks, try the stop leak solution until you save up enough to fix it right.

I just got over a "terrible" leak from my rack, inner tie rod, passenger side. I was refilling the system every 30-50 miles, very, very bad leak. I purchased two bottles of the lucas oil power steering sealer and before I even opened the 2nd bottle it stopped leaking, bout 2000 miles now without losing a drop, also, my power steering never sounded so good

Mine leaks at the steering yoke..I drained and filled the system with the Valvoline synthetic stuff and presto..pump is quite as can be, and the leak has slowed dramatically. I would never recomend the band aid solutions..however when it comes to ford steering racks..I can be swayed..there are just some things ford has never done well..that is def one of them.
