Legal Emission Camshafts

I would like to try to pick out a camshaft for my car but I'm a little concerned with which ones 50 state street legal. I live in California which is pretty strict so it has to 50 state. I know people ask question about which cams to put in their ride but before i go to that step I would like to know what makes a cam street legal.
Is it the duration?
Lobe Seperation?
Operating range?
Lift?
Combination of everyting?
I know certain cams like the Ecam or TFS stage 1 are street legal but I'd like to the know the characterists of a streetable cam.

I really didn't see a post that seemed to address this just suggestions on which cams to pick.

Question: how the heck would they know in the first place? It's INSIDE your engine block. If you dont say anything, noone will know.

Pick the cam that makes you happy and doesnt kill emissions on it's own.

What type of cam would kill emissions? a lumpy cam? I didn't know if there were specific characteristics cause when i look through my summit catalog some types of cams will emission legal and most won't.

In CA a carb number makes it legal. You can get away with a bunch of cams because they just won't know but the E cam seems to be the only one out there. I got turned down for even a pretest at one shop when I had a TFS stage 1 and I know it would have passed.

So did you got turned down because of how aggressive the cam sounded. I know a lot of stuff on my car doesn't a have a carb number but i still all my stock parts. I had to put them all back on last time i went through a smog test. i just wanted to get a cam that would give me good high end power that i wouldn't have to mess with in a a year when my next test comes around

Your going to have to go with a cam perferably with a wide lobe separation with almost no overlap, a cam like this wouldn make good vaccume as well. I would see about a custom cam.

Overlap causes emissions and lumping. Does your X pipe have cats, if not good luck. If so any cam that has either 0 or negative overlap should pass. Some examples are Crane 2030, 2031, Crower 15510, Comp XE258, 266, 270.

Ya the stage 1 was pretty lumpy which I really miss... The smog inspector was just covering his butt so I don't blame him for not putting my car on the dyno. He spent like 10 minutes looking at my stickers and matching them to the parts so he was being really cautious. Aparently the state is setting up stings on smog inspectors to try to pull their licenses and fine them... this state possibly the death sentence. hehe. I just took the easy route and did the e-cam. Definately would suggest a custom grind cam because they can taylor it to what you want and still get by emissions.

How would i go about trying to get a custom cam? I hear so many people suggest that but where? Anderson Ford? is that it?
