Looking at a 1986 GT Today. Any hints...

I notice it has a pedal assembly from a 5spd, with the clutch pedal cut off, looks like it used to be a 5spd car. The wiring on the interior is kinda scary...

good eye!

the automatic shifter in there doesn't look like the one in my 86. it looks like the one from an 87-up. what's the shift pattern on it? 1-D-OD-N-R-P would be correct... but it still looks too tall to me....

heres what mine looks like

i do see one thing that looks bad.... look at the positive battery terminal, then move up to the two fuse holders, then look to the right at the inner fender area- it looks like it's separated and rusting there. anybody else see that?

other than that, the 14" aftermarket wheels (stock would have been 15s), the fact that it was repainted (poorly- and needs it again), the mysterious red toggle on the dash (what the heck is that for?!), the dew wipes needing replacement (figure $100 for a new pair from 50RESTO), the AC needing work (thats what is missing from the connector), the interior needing work, it's a no-option car (except the AC of course). if the guy was already willing to drop $300 before you even negotiated price, he'll drop more. offer him $1800 and go as high as $2200. figure the balance will help cover repairs and maintenance.

It looks like an ok car but you are going to have to spend some money on it. The shifter is different for sure yoy can tell that it used to be standard....around the shifter base is same as my 5 speed. I would look around more try to find better and a 5 speed if you find no better make him an offer I think around $2000 would be fair.

The more i look at the pics.. i see you guys are right, i overlooked a ton of stuff. The body looks in decent shape, from the one pic (passenger side) it looks twisted. Wiring isn't something you want to mess with, it's a huge headache, but the body does look like it's in good shape (rust wise).

look at the pedals
look at the shifter
look at the wires under the coloumb

it was a 5 speed converted to an auto. does that shifter look like it came from a 4cyl?

i dont like those black spots on the driveway. looks like it was shooting soot out the tailpipes.

Yes, I took the car to a guy up the road. He has a couple. He also has a 1999 with a carburated 302 Stroker (not too sure what that mean yet, but the thing sounds like a rocket). Anyhow, with your help and somethings he found, I decided not to buy it.

- Rear Main seal was leaking
- hehe, the clutch pedal is still there under the carpet. (I did not even notice that when I stuck my head under there)
- he noticed the crack near the battery, thinks it was smashed in the front.
and a couple other small things.

SO, NOW.... Anyone within 200 miles of Tuscaloosa ALabama got an 85-93 GT for sale?
