Looky What I Bought!

Hey everyone I got my acount here about 6 months or so ago and I've pretty much just lurked until now. I have made a couple threads though in the last couple weeks about red GT's and shaving the antena if anyone remembers. Anyways I will Probably will be asking a lot of questions around here over the next little while because I'm only 14 and I don't have much experience with working on cars yet.

Ok, on to the main subject of my thread. About 2 or 3 weeks ago I bought a 1988 mustang GT. It has 95 xxx miles, runs decent and has red interior. I paid 1500 american for but i live in canada so it was about 1900 canadian after I got it across the border and including registration.

It's gonna be a project for my dad and I over the next cuople years. Right now we're getting the interior torn out and getting it ready to be painted black. Hopefully by the end of the winter it will be all painted and I will be able to piece together a 5-luck swap for the spring.

So, you'll prolly be hearing a lot of questions from me over the next little while, so try and be patient, lol.

It looks like a great project. A little shabby here and there, but it looks like its in pretty good shape.:nice:

If you have any questions feel free and don't hesitate! Everybody here is willing to help and we all love to see projects!

Just my opinion, but i think that car would look 1 billion % better if you took the headlight covers off.:D

what are your plans for the car?

I think I'm just going to try to make it into an all around street car. There are no tracks (road or drag) in my area so just something to cruise around in . I have 1500$ (canadian don't forget) in the bank and i've 1600$ coming in soon from my dirtbike that I sold so that should give me a decent start. Right now i'm just trying to decide on what shade of red I want to paint the car. Also I'm going to buy a cobra rear bumper and grille insert, and I'm i'm trying to find a 2.5" cowl hood in my area. The Interior is getting painted black, and I think I'm going to try to make my own rear seat delete. The car allready has a short shifter of un-know origin but I think I think I'm going to swap it out for an MGW as I've heard nothing but praise over them. For performance I'm going to see if I can find the parts for a 5-lug swap (look forward to a thread on that in the near future, lol) and I'd like to see If I can piece together a 10th anniversary cobra brake kit. Then after I get some more money saved up, I'd like to get a grip box from MM. I worked some this summer at the local ford dealer washing cars in the morning and hopefully next summer I will be able to work there full time. So it depends on how many good deals I will be able to find and how much money I can make how soon these mods get done. Hopefully I will be able to get those mentioned above done before I get my liscence and then once I get the handling and braking addresed I will be able to get some go-fast goodies. But anyways we'll have to see how things work out

I would recommend doimg a MAF sensor conversion, runs better and is more friendly to future modifications. Also take care of all the maintenence like flush the rad, CHANGE THE FUEL FILTER, plugs, wires, ya know the basics. I was fourteen when I got my first Mustang and it killed me not to drive it for a year and a half. Good luck, and ask away!

Looks like a nice project car. I will post up the junkyard upgrades for to help get started.

Junkyard upgrades...

Gears - 87-88 T-Bird Turbo Coupe rear axle - disc brakes and 3.55 or 3.73 gears in one package for $125-$300. Add another $100-$200 or so to complete the brake upgrade.

94-95 Mustang GT MAF - $40-$100. It is 70 MM instead of the stock 55 MM on regular stangs built prior to 94. It uses a slip on duct on the side that goes to the throttle body and a 4 bolt flange on the other. You need a flange adapter to fit the stock slip on air ducting that goes to the air box. Wiring plugs right in with no changes. *1 *2

95-97 Ford Explorer intake manifold & throttle body $150-$300. The intake manifold flows 220 CFM +, much better than stock. Throttle body is 65 MM, bigger than the 60 MM on stock stangs. I got a 96 with EGR passages that match the stock setup, so my smog gear works just like factory. You’ll need a 65 MM EGR spacer & new gaskets for $65-$90 so you have a place to mount the EGR & throttle linkage.

3G alternator from 94-95 Mustangs or other Ford. $20-$120. A must have to make the electrical system work like it should or if you have an electric fan. You’ll need a 4 gauge power wire and a 125-135 amp fuse to go with it about $15- $30.

Lincoln MK VIII electric fan -$40-$160. Free up some HP by not having to drive the stock fan. The 3G alternator upgrade is a must have prerequisite before you do the MK VIII fan. You won’t have enough electrical power if you don’t do the 3G upgrade.

Aluminum driveshaft: (courtesy of shawn13) It needs to be from a 92-93-94 Aerostar AWD and you will need the u-joint, part #353 from NAPA. It should bolt right up after the u-joint swap.

*1.) Metal flange adapter http://www.kustomz.com/cat3.html Buy the TR70 for $44.95. Or spend some time on eBay looking for one that may fit.

*2.) MAF & sensor interchange
The 94-95 Mustang 5.0 MAF & sensor is also found on:
1995-94 Mustang 3.8L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Crown Victoria 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1995-94 Mustang, Mustang Cobra 5.0L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Town Car 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Grand Marquis 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
Evidently the –A1A, -A2A, AA, etc. on the end of the part number is a minor variant that did not change the operating specs. You should be able to ignore it and have everything work good.

DUde come on keep the stock color!! It will look clean trust me I started out at 14 too with mine looking similar to yours in paint condition, but look how sick that combo can be:

That will be a good car for you! When you build something rather than buying it already done, you always take better care of it. It's good to see someone as young as you, getting into a hands on type of project. Good learning experience that you will never forget.

Great stuff! A side note is that you can cut the flange off the 94-95 maf sensor and save money on the adapter.

The black interior should look great as well as the cobra rear bumper. It looks like you have a great plan for your car. Good luck with your project!
