More than likely the 5th gear snap ring let go. It's a common failure, esp if the t5 has been rebuilt recently.
All you need to remove is the tailhousing of the trans. Leave everything else alone. When you take it off, there are two gears in the tailhousing assembly. That's 5th. The small gear is the driven gear and there is a snap ring that holds this in place that usually fails. You'll prob find it on the bottom of the tailhousing.
Simply slide 5th back into place, and install a NEW snap ring. I've found that when these are removed, they tend to bend and never really fully seat back in place.
got it apart and voila! 5th gear snap ring was off. i tapped the gear gently back into place and i will be replacing the snap ring with a new one from ford dealer. i also found the cause of my loose shifter-the detent ball and spring is missing, along with whatever sleeve or insert should be in the offset lever for the bottom of the shifter stick to engage. so the shifter stick is loose in the offset shift lever and there is no detent so no "click" feeling when going into gear. i really wish when people "rebuild" stuff, they would figure out where the "extra" parts go.
hopefully these parts are servicable, otherwise i need to find a junk t5 i guess
