M90 on top of 302.

I was reading a thread on superchargers and I was wondering if it was possible to put my Eaton M90 SC on top of my 302. Would it push enough air to even make boost? It's off my 3.8L (made 15psi). Also if anyone has done this (havent seen it) what intake did you use?

I think I saw a thread just like this a couple of weeks ago and answered it just about how I'll answer this one.

I think that the expense of adapting that SC to a 302 would be cost prohibitive. The snout is the wrong length, you'd have to make a custom manifold in order to adapt it to a 302 and it's a notoriously inefficient blower. I'm thinking that it would likely peak well before a even a stock 302 would.
 
I read on the SCCOA site that these things were made for 3.0L to 5.0L displacement engines. So I don't know how it would react to one of these. BTW, I still have my M-90 for sale if anyone wants it.... just think.... technically, you'd have a 6.5L as it is 1.5L of positive displacement.
 
I did it with an M112 for about a grand total, including the blower.
I was introduced to a guy at a local machine shop who made me a completely new snout with shaft and 6-rib pulley, along with the plates for the inlet and outlet of the blower (to make the custom manifold adapters) for a grand total of $300.
I bought the blower off ebay for $400. And got an FMU for $50.
The I made an adapter for a GT-40 lower out of 2x4" box channel steel. Holes for the bolts and runners were drilled with the above machine work, and I just welded end caps, and the blower outlet adapter plate to the box channel.
The box channel also helped get the snout of the blower anout 1/8" about the distributer cap.
Next I made a sheetmetal inlet for the blower that had the throttle body mounted to it.
Actually quite simple once I think about it.
Let me look for the link that gave me inspiration to do the project.

Oh, and my setup was in the heavy 4x4 Ranger in my sig, and it was faster than my brothers C-5 vette. Well, below 70-80mph it was, then the brick like shape started to really hurt.

I was thinking, could you just make some tubes and treat it like a centrifugal type blower? Like a tube to where the intake box is and then a tube to tube up to the tb. I could mount it where the smog pump used to be. (custom brackets)
 
Yes, you can do this provided you can find somewhere in the engine bay to mount that huge thing. The Eaton roots is designed to be mounted anyway.... sideways...upright....upside down. The only dowside is that you would have to take it back off to oil it if you don't mount it upright (not sure how often they need it). I've seen a few setups like this. One was a Dodge Aries, lol. He mounted it on its side. I had mine mounted on my old Ranger 3.0L Super Coupe style (minus intercooler).... it was on top of the upper.... pushing air out the top.... then plumbed into the stock TB location. I had to cut a hole in my hood. If you just take it out and hold it over your engine.... you'll see just how huge these things are. If you do it, though, I'd recommend mounting it on its side.... on the passenger side somewhere. I don't think there is near enough room where the smog pump is, though.

It's been done before. So It's not very difficult. But you will have to fabricate some sort of bypass like the ones for centrifigals. One of the members on the Corral has done this.

I'm thinking about adapting the M112 to my 5.0L with an explorer lower
Do you have any pictures of your setup or ca you share more information about your experience? PM me?
 
If your good at scrounging up parts/supplies, its mostly just sweat equity.

not the most efficent way to make power, but it does work

My explorer has an eaton M90 mounted to the top of it, but it won't work with mustang accessories. It sits pretty far foward on a gt40 style lower.

On a stock 5.0l explorer 2wd it gains you 86 rwhp. Most of it far below 5000 rpm. (not sure how much i get because mines AWD)
Good for an auto suv, but probably not worth the time for a one off for a mustang.

Wouldn't be great to race with it, gives my explorer some extra kick, but far from a race unit.

wow, nice looking setup.
how much power does that put to the ground.

what pulley ratio do you use and how do you tune it? any idea what the temps are at WOT? what fuel are you running?
 
Doesn't anybody remember the BBK Instacharger. It used the same M90 that is found on the Supercoupes and XR7s, only with a shorter snout. It was mounted on the passenger side like most centrificals. The M90s generated ALOT of heat. The early models (with the oval shaped inlet) are very ineffecient. The ones that came on the 94-95 SCs and XR7s are much better. The have a larger, rectangular inlet port that is placed slightly higher than the previous model. There are companies like Magnum Powers that sell replacements (or they will modify yours) that are "worlds" more effecient than the eaton. I put a 15% pulley on my 90 Supercoupe, ported the blower, ported the inlet tube to match, bought a cheap CAI off ebay, had a custom blower outlet made (to get rid of the bottleneck on the stock piece), full exhaust without cats, flowmaster midsection and some cheap turbo mufflers.............and it went .54 sec. slower at the track, all because with the 15% pulley, the amount of heat generated from the M90 killed HP.

the old gen. m90 works fine in my car, makes 300rwhp with stock hardware.... but it gets HOT HOT HOT! 260* +

so, you see what I am saying then. I'm not saying that adding an M90 to a mustang won't make more power, I'm just saying that when comparing it to centrificals or even twin screw type its not real effecient. If you could drop your air intake temperature with some sort of cooler or a Snow performance kit, you would feel a HUGE difference in power, not only from the cooler intake charge, but you could run more timing. A roots type like the M90 makes full boost almost instantly, but doesn't really shine at higher RPMs like the centrificals or twin screws. So I guess it would just depend on what you are looking for. ........by the way, that's awesome that you got that M90 mounted on your mustang. I'd like to see a pic of that.

There are many places that sell them. I bought mine from Racer Walsh, other companies such a Super Coupe Performance sell them. They are all about the same price wherever you buy them.
