For an '89 5sp Coupe:
In my liberal state of Washington, emission equip is required on this car for another 9 years.
(Not too liberal, but go figure )

I'm curious if anyone has run the MagnaFlow catback behind a hi-flow cat'd H?

I've heard the sound of a catback behind their cat'd X and it sounds good, but I'm thinking I want the car to be a little deeper than what I've heard ... but not 40 Flows deep.

How would you rate your sound in comparison between the X and H??
I'm scared the 300 for an H won't bring the catback alive and will be wasted money when I could have just gone with the mediocrity of the X.

My opinion:

1) Magnaflow is complete junk. I vowed to never buy another one of their products after I spent 500 on a catted stainless X pipe and it fit about as well as a turd in a punch bowl. Nothing lined up, I had to use a pry bar on the header flange and then it dragged so low I had to cut the hangers and weld them up higher. Completer junk.
2) An H pipe sounds so much better on our cars than a x pipe. I ended up going with a bassani stainless catted H and love it.

I've found that to be the case more often than not with any aftermarket pieces ... sometimes you just get a bad piece when the jig-man is a dunce

I think the flexability of the UPR piece is the way to go when these pieces are made one-size-fits-all

I agree about the H sounding better ... I'm just curious as to whether the sound with an H works well with the MagnaFlows ... or if they sound off running behind an H

I can tell you as someone who has had the Magnaflows behind an H pipe, that it makes them louder and just a touch deeper then someone using a Magnaflow X pipe- they are definitely louder though-

Magnaflow also makes an off road and catted H pipe as well as an X for the fox bodies, so we had to make sure they sounded good with both-

Also- for the person with the fitment issues-
I can assure you the jig on this piece if correct, at this point Magnaflow recieve less then 1 complaint for every 1000 X pipes for the 87-93 fox body being sold-

I personally have installed them on several of my friends vehicles myself-

In fact all of our jigs go through certain process as we are ISO9001 certified-

Not to mention we build the X pipes for Saleen, Roush, and Steeda- and when supplying parts to other manufactures, who will not accept any part that they have to fool with when they are trying to get new cars out the door-

All finished goods are rechecked in a second jig prior to be packaged-

Basically I can say with cofidence that when you have OE car companies compliment you on your jigs- you know what I mean-

If you have a fitment issue, please feel free to contact our tech line at
1-800-990-0905 and discuss it with us- as 99.9% we are able to help solve the problem-

We would be more then happy to discuss any fitment issues with anybody that has them-

Thank you -

As a magnaflow sales rep, I am glad to see that you are happy to discuss the problem now ... only three years after I asked for this problem to be resolved. As for your jig, the magnaflow pipe didn't come close to matching the specs of the factory h. That jig did not have a correct spec in the past ... this has been discussed among others as well .... hey, truth hurts. Perhaps your jig is much better now but it has not always been that way.
I have also talked with several others that have had the same issue ... like having to use a pry bar to get the pipe to bolt up to the header. Additionally, I have had a mac h, bbk x and now a bassani x without any of the fitment issues I encountered with the magnaflow. So, if you intend to imply that it was just my car or my installation, it certainly was not.
This was not an isolated incident and others have contacted magnaflow with these same problems only to have also been blown off by their "customer service". Fortunately, I no longer have this pipe .... From now on I will only purchase and suggest Bassani products to others. Thanks for your willingness to help out with fitment issues but magnaflow is about three years late in getting a return customer.

I hear ya ... but I bought a BBK H that had the crap fit too (prybar).
It's hit and miss with most companies.

The Bassani stuff is nice, but it's too expensive
Maybe $100 worth of materials for a $600 catback
... that leaves 500 for labor and tooling.

(Most manufacturers are too much for what you're getting)

I think the UPR X pipes are an excellent design (w/ the adjustable collector tube) and the best value right now

If you want value- go get a couple of the satin finish Magnaflows welded into your factory piping- (the satin were formerly known as aluminized- but they are all stainless not- many people still call them aluminized though- )

Easy, cheap, and about 80% of the gains at 50% of the price- hp wise- definitely a great bang for the buck-

I have Magnaflow mufflers behind a catted BBK H pipe. Its sounds very good. I don't know if my blower helps but people definitely know when I'm coming up behind them when I'm on the gas. All my Magnaflow stuff seems to fit ok-not the best but not the worst. Nothing beats Bassani. However, you pay for the quality of Bassani products.

I second the recommendation for the UPR X-pipe ...

... although I have yet to actually receive mine and bolt the thing up. (Somewhere in the distance, a UPS driver is eating a foot-long sammich on an overly-extended lunch break...)

Their cat'ed and off-road X's are generally just as cheap (cost-wise) as the generic pieces offered by Jeg's and Summit (the cat'ed X costs the same as a CatCo H-pipe w/cats, $299), but the UPR design is MUCH better (multi-piece with ball-n-socket flanges). I have yet to receive anything so-so or blah from them yet, so until then, I'll pimp and plug their name everywhere I can ... except for their shipping charges, which seem a tad steep, and they're not up-front with them at all with online orders (didn't know 'till I got my card statement that I paid about $30 shipping for a friggin' KC clutch kit).

My understanding is that when using an "H" pipe one should only use chambered design mufflers like Flowmaster.
Conversely when using an "X" pipe one should only use a straight through flow design like Magnaflow.
Is this correct?

No that is a rumor that got started on here.....

Kind of like the you get better torque with an H then an X as well-

1. Not all Xs are the same-There are alot of Xs on the market with no research behind them that will not give any better gains then an H pipe- Ill let you guess who they are- but they are mostly the cheaper ones-

Bassani, Dr. Gas, Magnaflow- pick one of those for real results-

2. A straight through muffler will work better with a properly designed X pipe then a chambered muffler-

3. A chambered muffler will not work better then a straight through with an H pipe-

some may like the way it "sounds" better but sound does not equal power-

Here at Magnaflow we build-

H pipes, X pipes, Straight Through Mufflers, Chambered Mufflers-

and we have done some very extensive research with them all-

From a power stand point the most important thing is exhaust gas velocity-

Go too big on your piping- loose velocity-

Add duals on a car that doesnt make enough power to support it- loose velocity

Add restrictions in the mufflers- loose velocity-

If we are going to run a race- and I can run in a straight line, but you have to run around a bunch of barriers - I am going to win every time-

I would trade 5 power digits for a healthy sound that gives wood vs picking up 5 and listening to an annoying fart everytime you drive the car.

I'm concidering picking up the MagnaFlow cat'd H to go with your guys' cat-back ... but honestly, which sounds "crisper" when bolted to your catbacks: your X or your H.

BTW : Good post above

Well sound is definitely objective- but I will give you my opinion-

In my 66 fasback, I am running a 5.0 out of a 90 GT with all the fuel injection still on it- I am running all the basic bolt ons, along with the blower-

My exhaust combo is BBK long tubes, to a 2.5" system with the Magnaflow X pipe and the Magnaflow mufflers- not the Magnapacks-

I personally love the way it sounds-

The H pipe was deeper, but this is crisper- I also think the X gives it a cleaner sound- of course I am talking about off road pipes on my car with no converters-

With the X it is queiter until about 3500 RPM- but the sound that comes out after 3500RPM is what I love-

But this is where it becomes difficult- because just because I like the way it sounds- does not mean that you will-

Of course it all depends on how good your speakers are, but we do have a sound clip of a 90 Mustang LX with shorty equal length headers, our catted X pipe and our Magnaflow catback on our website-

Take that sound, make it a little deeper and you have the catted H pipe-

Hope that helps-

Brent

THanks BTW-
