making my car quieter what to buy?

alright well i have an o/r h-pipe w/40series flows and it is honestly too loud in the interior i decided for christmas i'd ask the family for a maganflow catback because i had heard they cut down on the drone compared to flows but my dad went to the mustang shop and told them my situation and they said i should just keep the flows and get a catted h or catted xpipe ive decided if i go w/any id go w/the catted x but i dont wanna much power and i still want it fairly loud on the outside the plus to the catted pipe is that it is cheaper and i would be street legal and not have to swap them on and off for emissions so basically i still want my car fairly loud but quieter in the interior and less drone and i dont know how much power i would loose going from an o/r h to a catted x pipe and what is a good catted mid pipe brand sorry i know this is alot but my dad is driving me crazy about this lol

Going quieter is going to lose you a little power,but we're talkin 2-3 hp maybe. I'd say it's worth it if the sound bothers you that much.

Whats with everyone wanting their cars quieter???? DONT BUY an offroad pipe if you dont want loud!! mines already loud and the only thing i'd consider is goin louder.

I would go with the Catted X-Pipe. It will be some quietier but not to much. I believe my car runs better with cats (and it will because of back pressure).

I have heard some people use baffels in the tail pipes to quite drone, or I read a thread (couldn't find it) that someone welded a little tude somewhat connected to the exhaust behind the cats and eliminated the drone completly.

The drone is said to come from the noise resonance of equal tail pipe lengths and stuff. That is why the stock mufflers sit at different lengths from the tail pipes, etc.

At least that is what I remember reading...no expert.

Get some Dynamat or brown bread and cover the interior. It should cut down in cabin volume. The drone will still be there, but it will be less.

Cheapest route is probably to have the flows cut out and weld something quieter in. I have Borla Pro-XS with MRT catted H. Got the mufflers for ~150 shipped and had them welded in for about $80.

i had o/r Prochamber and Magnaflow. I had Zero drone, and it was nicely loud - Not too loud, and not too quite. I've rode in Flow and Mac o/r H, and honestly, its stupid loud in my opinion. and drone was just too much.

I like my exhaust loud -when and ONLY when I'm on the gas. Not when I'm rollin' at highway speed.
I think you will be very happy with Magnaflow. It was just perfect. I now have LT and O/R H, and Roush side exhaust, and its nice sound, tad bit louder at WOT would be nice, but at highway speed, it sound like stocker. I like that

Adding cats is one way to tone it down. But the stupid drone you still have.

Forgot to add, Borla Pro-XS is rated quite well as far as good HP while not being obnoxiously loud. Do a search for catback performance article.

I don't know about all of you, but I have a three year old that rides with me and another one on the way. OR pipe with flows was not going to work for me. At highway speeds, mine is only slightly louder than stock, which is perfect for me. But, when I get on it, everyone knows.....

thanks for the help guys the thing that drives me crazy is the drone more than anything the noise doesnt bother me that much i drive mostly interstate coming to and from college and between 70-75 the drone is horrible but even w/my stock cats on those flows still drone so i think the catback will be the best choice thanks

SLP makes a good X-pipe if you're still interested in that route.

But mity2 is right, magnaflow is a nice exhaust system. At least, that's what i've heard from everyone.

I'm considering swapping my o/r prochamber and flows for an SLP x-pipe and Steeda Catback. I cant stand the drone of this crap anymore and it's not NEAR loud enough..

get a straight thru desing muffler it should cut down on the drone. That is one reason why i dont like flowmaster

true.. SLP LM1 and LM2 are awesome.. the LM2 is more my taste, it's a lower more mellow sound, but it's still damn loud.

Borla Stinger is just insanely loud with an o/r X-pipe tho.. amazing sound on the 4V, best sound i've EVER heard on a Mustang (opinion of course)

Maybe pull your back seat out, there are two clips that hold it in, about 8-9" from each side. Easy to figure out.

Lay down some Dynomat under the seat and replace. Maybe add some foam.

Since its about where you back seat is that the mufflers are that should help.

Just a thought.

If the 2 chambers are too loud you could go with some 3 chambers. Try Flows 50 series. If you like the sound dont switch to a X pipe, stay H. Or weld some Dynomax Bullet mufflers in where the cats would go.

Even then, he'll still have drone. Which is what he says bothering him. I say straight through muffler. Magnaflow or magnapack. Pack is louder, and have bit of tinny sound tho

If it's the drone you don't like inside the car you need resonators. Almost all cars come from the factory with them.

A friend of mine put a big one in his street rod trucka nd it is night and day different inside the truck but still sounds mean under throttle and at idle.

Just check out www.flowmastermufflers.com If you want to keep the "Flowmaster tone." They've done alot since the original 40 series. "This is the latest design of the 50 series muffler that utilizes Flowmasters patented "Delta Flow" technology along with an "H-Chamber" to eliminate most all interior resonance and still have that famous Flowmaster sound outside the vehicle." And you can listen to all their mufflers. Dynomax Ultra Flows sound nice n deep without any drone. At least they sound good on my 63 Merc.
