Making my own hood

Tired of the crappy fit,finish and the fact the one i have isnt big enough!Plus the fact i like to do all my own stuff,and i figured i'd saving myself atleast $500!So i took a stock steel foxbody hood and i am making my own cowl hood.It's a 4" cowl and is all steel.This way i can use the stock latching system and will clear my engine!I made templetes and then cut out my owm pieces out of sheet metal to raise the cowl.It isnt all that heavy and this is the fab point of it.I need to bondo where nessary and smooth it all out,then prime and paint it!LMK what ya think so far?peace

that looks great i was thinking about this the other day looking at a bunch of the new hoods on the newer ford cars .i thought of how is easy it would be to cut out a section of say a new mustang hood and weld it to our hoods.

I have also thought about cutting and fabing in little air scoops on the side for more cooling air into the bay?YEAH or NAH? Thanks. peace

I say nah, unless you incorporate them like the mach 1 two scoop style or were you thinking more like the scoops on the 96-98 Cobras style hoods. Nice work!

Like the cobra type scoops,but they will be on the side's of the cowl.Not on top of the cowl itself.peace

Cutting scoops into the hood of an efi car just dumps dirt on the motor.

To really pull air through the radiator and past the motor, a simple cowl creates a low pressure zone above the windshield that is quite effective at drawing air through.

Nice work. I like scoops like the stalker hood has. There was a turbo hood that had 2 triangles up front and center with slits in the rear of the cowl. I dont know how functionnal that is but, it could lighten the hood up just a little. keep the pics coming which ever way you decide to go.

Everything I've read seems indicate the opposite - that aside from parked, at 5mph at above it actually creates a high pressure zone at the base of the windshield that forces air into the engine bay. This is great for a Carbed motor that intakes air at the top. Not great for cooling though because it creates more pressure in the engine bay.

Heat extractor hoods, however, do take advantage of a low pressure zone over the top of the hood and they help to bring air through the radiator. If I thought it would fit with my TFS-R box upper, I'd have one of those in a heartbeat.

At a standstill, such as in rush hour traffic, there's no way to deny that a cowl hood helps as you can see the immense amount of heat distorting the air coming out of the cowl, though..

When you are finished on the hood could you post pics of the underside with the supports. I made a 2 tier hood with my stock hood and am looking for a better way to support the middle of the hood

Thanks guys.Worked on it some today.Not sure as to what i'll do for support,as it seems to be pretty rigid.But when or if i need to stiffen it up i will post pics!Will go back on thursday to work on it more.peace
