All good points Grady. I can understand your logic in first going for the parts that you feel will yield the best results.

I just wasn't gonna put my money toward a tb which would not give
gain like a set of nice flowing Aluminum heads

A catback before a custom cam

An aftermarket meter before an aftermarket intake

I think he was referring to the Steeda Real Street class. To that point, I would comment that there is nothing "street" about a Real Street car! Similarly a "stock" car is not very stock.

Maybe I can shed some light on this subject this summer. I am going to run my stock cam with Thumper ported GT40P's with 1.7 RR's and a Trickflow street intake. I have a 70 mm throttle body, 80 mm MAF, underdrive pullies with no smog or A/C. Exhaust is BBK shorties with off road X and dumped flows. I know it isnt AFR heads and Track heat intake, but it should make half decent power. My plan is to bolt on a Vortech blower maybe next winter, and I hear the stock cam is decent for boost, so Im going to save some cash and try it out. I want to dyno it before and after the blower, so I will be able to post up a dyno sheet for proof of my combo with a stock cam. Problem is that it will take a couple months for me to get it all bolted up and running.

Edit: Maybe I should elaborate on the heads. Mike is upgrading the exhaust valves to the bigger GT40 valves, and replacing them all with stainless steel under cut valves with a 5 angle job. Im looking forward to seeing the finished product, and seeing how much of a kick in the pants it will be still using the stock cam.

Sounds like it will be a great kick in the pants with great driveability.

He might be confusing Real Street with Trophy Stock. I don't even think they have Trophy Stock anymore though. Real Street cars obviously aren't limited to stock cams. Trophy Stock cars suposedly have stock cams. In reality, they are just limited to stock on the absolute dimensions on the cam shaft. Competitive in Trophy Stock is mid 11s. I know it became one of the most expensive classes to be competitive in. Probably why I don't see them run that class anymore. What's the point if you have to spend all kinds of money, and still have an 11 second car?

This is a very interesting thread I started.....I created a monster. Thanks to everyone for all the advice. One of these days I will get to the engine stuff. Still working on the tranny swap, damn I am slow. Its nice to work on something and just take it easy....no pressure. If I worked this slow at work ...well I won't have a job anymore.

Yup I sure am, in PDX. Take your time though as it is your project. We are all interested obviously, but no rush.

Well I have it all together and Ive been waiting 2 weeks for a guy to send me a chip from South Carolina to Iowa. He keeps needing one extra piece of info over and over again and the process is getting drug out... The chip is the same brand as my dyno tuner, so my plan is to run it this summer (assuming the tune is pretty close), and dyno it in late August or so. I have a rather odd situation at work happening right now where I am only getting paid out a 1/4 of my $12K commission from last quarter, and I just had to replace my original 1981HVAC system at home. That all means that dyno money is non existent right at the moment. If I actually get to collect the extra $9K sometime soon, then the dyno will be the first place Im going. Trust me, I want to see just where the stock cam will put my combo power wise, but I just have to wait until things fall into place better.

I know this is a ancient old thread but I wanted to make a post saying that 2yrs ago I accidentally put together a stock shortblock 302 with the stock HO camshaft and it makes over 330rwhp with only 2 major parts changed on the engine.

A set of 11r205's that were decked to 50cc chambers and a Explorer intake with the lower intake hand ported by me. What's more surprising to me is how much power the stock 55mm mass air meter, 19lb injectors and 60mm TB supported the airflow to make this much power.

In my 3000lb coupe with 3.08 gears on Pony wheels with hard 16in 245 street tires ran a 13.05@110mph. That's on 93 pump gas and 10 degrees initial timing. I bumped the timing 2 degrees to 12 and ran a 13.00@112mph.

Well.....i kinda did...lol. It all started with the heads. Found them on Ebay bare like you see them as they arrived to me. They were labeled USED by the seller and was a bid action for them. The really funny part is there was ZERO bidders! The starting bid was $900 so with 10 seconds left on the auction to end i bid $925 and won the auction.

Now I had i set of heads that I REALLY had no intention of buying so I had to put them to use and the Explorer intake was the only other aftermarket parts at had at the time.

I was damn sure it would be weak as hell with the stock 55mm mass air meter and 60mm TB but I was wrong! I was totally SHOCKED at how much power it was making ESPECIALLY the torque! Everyone that has rode it swears it has 3.73 gears as easily it boils the tires in 1-2nd and it has 3.08's. Drives TOTALLY like a stock cam 5.0 mustang except with 150 more HP and 50-75ftlbs of torque.

If you want to gain a few RPMs and a little HP boost add a set of 1.7 rocker arms on it and it won't hurt all that torque you gained
