Meguire's Quik Clay Kit?

Anyone used this? It's a clay bar kit that comes with a bottle of Quik Detailer and a little teeny clay bar. It claims to make paint "smooth as glass." Anyone know if it works as good as the other clay bars out there?

I want to give my paint a really good cleaning before I wax it this spring, using Meguire's Gold Class liquid wax. I think this claybar kit will do the trick, anyone have any suggestions of what to put in between the clay bar and wax though? Maybe the Step #2 Polish?

I've never used it, but have not heard great things. If you want a real winner of a clay kit, go with ClayMagic (Autozone, Wal-mart), I've used this one and was really impressed. I know it gets alot of high marks on Autopia as well.

As far as a routine--and rjstaaf will agree here--it is VERY difficult to give you a prescription without seeing your car in person. However, all things equal, after claying you could use the #2 Deep Crystal polish, 3M SMR or Meg's #9, all depending on the actual condition of your paint, then go right to a PURE wax, such as #26, #16 or 3M Show Car paste wax (easy to see I'm a Meg's and 3M fan).

Don't bother with Gold Class, its durability--or lack thereof I should say--is legendary. It also has mild cleaners in it, which will degrade some of the polishing you just did. I absolutely keep my polish and wax as separate steps.

The typical formula for success is as follows:

Wash car w/ dawn dishliquid
Claybar kit
Wash car again
Meguiars number 9
Meguiars number 7
Then your choice of either or both Meguiars number 20 and/or 26

Do you do the 9 then the 7 then the 26 on top of each other or one the wax off then the other etc...

and just let each one haze before applying the next and then wipe them all off together?

I used the Meg's claybar, and it worked great for me. Got 3 year old paint overspray off of my ranger no problem. The big thing is to use it right-make sure to use plenty of the quik detailer to keep the paint surface wet, and just run the bar over the paint, don't press down.

I do the following (all meg's products):
Wash with rich suds
claybar
use step 1 paint cleaner
use step 2 polish
use gold class paste

I have heard about the gold class's lack of durablity, however I garage my car and don't really have a problem with it. I tried the #26 (? yellow hi-tech wax) and it didn't do as good of a job shine wise, imo. I seem to have better luck with the consumer line anyway for some reason (the quik detailer vs the final inspection, the gold class vs the hi-tech yellow)....

Also, the Gold class trim detailer works awesome on black trim, like the SN95'S mirrors and cowl cover....

Thanks for the input guys, I seem to have misplaced my Gold Class (along with my Hot Rims dammit I love that stuff) so I guess it's back to the drawing board. I think I'll go with the clay bar first, then wash it good again, then give it the Meguire's 3 step....I've heard nothing but good things about the 3 step.

You apply each one individualy. First, try number 9. Its both a polish and abrasive. Light abrasive that is. You work this in much like you do lotion on your hands. After carefully working this stuff in(preferabley using a soft foam applicator pad) you then wipe the excess off with a clean cloth(microfiber or diaper cloths are best). Then, do the same with the number 7. Its a pure polish that works to enrichen your paints gloss and tone. After removing the excess number 7, apply number 26 like you do any other wax for its a pure yellow wax. Let haze and then lightly buff off. Microfiber is best for buffing wax. No need to do one section at a time either. Its clear coat safe. Just apply and then move to the next section. While doing the other sections, it should haze and be ready to buff off when you finish the car.
