guys today i was talking to my tuner about my future boosted application. which will consist of:

built block
novi 2000 around 14psi
p-51 intake.
and all the mods i have now...heads, cams, l/t...

this setup should make hopefully around 500 rwhp we both agree on that.

so he says that i wont need the intercooler, that i should just get the SNOW methonol kit or somthing. he said he hardly uses intercoolers on his cars and with my mods i will make around the 500 mark with the methonol. he said he dont like intercoolers.

so i always wanted to get ythe intercooled set up and never thought of anything else.

how does the methonol work? is it harmful to the car in any way? which is better and what is the difference?

thanks guys.

It isn't harmful unless it sticks open and hydrolocks your engine. You need to keep the tank filled, and you need to seperate tune to run it vs. not running. Those are the downfalls. The upside is that it is much cheaper than the intercooler setup.

Why do you have to keep the tank filled? I don't know about methanol either...

you get more power with a boost cooler because it cools the air, which allows you to run more timing. you need the constant flow of methonal/water to keep the aircharge cool while racing. if the tank goes empty, you aren't cooling the air anymore. the aircharge temp will increase and your engine will start knocking because it's running too much timing for the air temp.

an intercooler is the best and safest way to go. it's always there working. unfortunatley, it's more expensive.

well with some injection kits you can use windshield washer fluid, which is cheap. and you can always use a larger tank then the ones supplied in the kits.

i think it depends on what your looking for, a setup that is pretty much only good during races or spend more and have it 100% of the time

I agree...depends on what your looking for. I may install a Snow kit for when i am at the track and running a 12psi pulley. I would have a dedicated tune also. And they make bigger tanks, i've seen them up to 7 gallons. Most of the guys i spoke to who run it on the street go through 1/2 gallon of washer fluid per gas tank fill up. Thats not too bad at all.

thanks for your guys insight and opinions. i dont know why exactly he dont like intercoolers. i will have to ask him again. i really felt like that was the was i wanted to go because it seems like the methonol is just a short cut. then he sprung that on me today and it made me think.

the intercooler is alot more expensive but i want whats best for the car. the methonol seems like too much trouble for me...i rather shell out the extra cash.

i think my tuner dont like the intercoolers because he is not big on timeing.
he keeps it low on everyones cars because it is more safe. he still gets good power out of the cars without it. isnt the intercooler just so you can run the timing way up and get more power?

i still dont know why he would favor that over the intercooler. also maybe because i dont drive the car everyday. i dont know.

i think i still like the intercooler. paxton air to air.. also what is the difference between paxton air to air and the other intercoolers?

thanks guys.

The Paxton air to air intercooler will fit the best with your Novi 2K
compaired to the other. If you do get a Novi 2K make sure you get
the matching Paxton intercooler to go with it.I personaly don't like
the methonol injection and would rather have a intercooler.Pushing
that much boost you will need a intercooler and a built block or you
will be running on barrowed time.

sounds like the intercooler is the better option, except for loosing boost throught the intercooler. then i have to turn the blower harder to get the same power and boost....that is what you are saying right?

well i guess thats why i am going with the 2000 anyway. i will be loosing boost through the heads and cams and now the inter cooler.....i am going to have to run a tiny pully just to see 14psi.:D

Seems like from what I read you can run more timing with methanol even if you have an intercooler. Would that make methanol more effective when it is on?

Either way it seems like methanol would be more effective.

However as already stated you dont have it on all the time.

Personally, I don't think a single person in this thread has given you a good (accurate) reason for not using water / methanol injection. Properly installed and calibrated, these kits work excellent and are much better bang for the buck than an intercooler.

The Snow stage II kit I use on my car works flawlessly. If your tuner prefers water / meth over intercoolers, I can only guess he feels more comfortable with the security that offers over an intercooler in his tune. My tuner also preferred water / meth over an intercooler and was glad that I had the kit.

Nothing to fail on on a fmic and nothing to fill. I hope yours continues to work flawlessly. I know my intercooler will. Because for the poor people that have had a water alchy fail it's resulted in blown engines.
