MGW...will it loosen up a little

I like the shifter but it's not much better than the stock one with a homemade short handle. The shift's are a bit shorter and a little more persice but it feels real notchy. Will it work in and get a little smoother. Also I can really hear the tranny now even with a CobraBob gasket (real thin) I might swap out the gasket with a stangmod gasket (3-4X's as thick) that might make things a little less noisy......Maby I just need to get used to it. I am running the Blue handle now I like it a little more than the orange so I probly won't even try the red one. I cant run the leather knob it wont thread on in the right posisition (upside down) and if I make it strait it's loose. I had to really crank the stock knob on to get it on the right way. I think I was more happy about the ash-tray being fixed than the shifter

Anyone else have any of this happen

Buddy has a MGW shifter in his 99GT its REALLY stiff and hasent loosened up from day one, youll get used to it htough, its a nice piece.

Any aftermarket shifter will be noisy, thats just the way their built. I've never had experience with a MGW only steedas, and they aren't extremley tight like you describe.

aftermarket shifters are often noisy...mine definately took some getting used to. Will the springs loosen up? Not likely, what will happen is you'll adjust to it and probably prefer it to the stocker.

My MGW shifter loosened up after one month of driving.
I still love my MGW shifter though.
My old Steeda Tri Ax shifter wasn't as stiff as the MGW.

I have a Pro-50 shifter and its still tight after having it for over a year. Im not sure why but since the day I put it in 3rd gear has a slight whine to it.

Two things could happen:

1) It will loosen up over time

2) You will get used to the force required to shift your car from now on and think it loosened up

Geez....i never heard they were stiff...i was thinking of putting one on my Tremec but damn, the Tremec goes in gear like you're not using a clutch so if the shifter makes it more stiff i might not be able to shift lol.

Roland, did you use the lock nut on the shifter to allow you to position your leather knob properly? Sounds like you forgot to put it on.

Stiff while shifting is one thing and either you or the shifter will adapt (probably both). If it's hard getting into gear (like 1st from a stop) then you likely need to adjust the cable a bit to smooth it out.

Mine was stiff the first few days but it got better after a couple weeks. By then i was used to it so it didn't matter.

As for noise, it was a little noisy at first but that slowly disappeared. Mine makes no noise now at all.

As for the shifter ball? Find a bolt that the knob will thread onto and cut about 1/2" off and put a slot in one side. Screw it inside the knob and use it to adjust the position of the knob. Will take some experimenting but it will help you tighten the knob up in the correct spot and not thread down far enough to screw up the leather boot.

After you deal with those issues, the shifter is great, i love mine

my tri-ax was stiff starting out, probably bc i came from stock one. Which was sloppy. I was kind of thinking, hmm didnt make much difference.... bc i hardly missed shifts with the stocker anyway. But after a week or two you can tell. You will find yourself shifting alot faster.

i have a PRO 5.0 and it doesnt make any noise what so ever...even in 3rd. My brother has a tri-ax and it makes a little whine in 3rd but thats it....both seem to be real nice shifters. We've both had em for 6 months or so and they seem to be as tight as they were on day one. I wouldnt expect it to loosen up, these shifters are made more for banging shifts without missin gears more than silky smooth shifting.

I'm getting used to it...I love the shifter and yea it's only a bit noisy in 3rd. I can't figure what handle I like better.

It does take a little time to loosen up and for the notchyness to go away. As for noise, my tranny was the cause which was just more noticeable with the MGW over the stock shifter. Second and third were just showing its age in my case so there isn't much you can so about the noise.

Yeah you have to remember, going from a stock shifter with the rubber bushing from body to handle to an aftermarket with no dampening is going to transfer all the little vibrations and noise that wasn't there before. It explains why you now hear a vibration in 3rd, which I'm sure was there all along. But, I guess it's the trade off for the solid feel and crisper shifting we all want.

HAHA no thanks . Why don't you buy a MGW and sell the hurst on ebay or even on here. They usually fetch 60-100 on ebay.
