Well, the picture is becoming more clear as I start to accumulate parts what i'm going to need to rebuild this '71 302 the right way. So far I have an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold and a Performer-Plus cam with hydraulic lifters sitting in my room. As for the rest of the motor, most of you already know i'm boring the block .030 over and rebuilding it with a Fel-Pro Sealed Power kit with forged pistons. I plan on adding new valvesprings and a new timing chain as per the cam's instructions, but I was also thinking about a nice set of roller rockers as well. I plan on running the stock heads, because the Performer heads are way too expensive. I'll be topping all of this off with an Edelbrock 600 carb. What are some good roller rockers that I can afford on a 16-year-old's budget?

Also, where the f@$% am I going to find a Hurst shifter for the RAD 4-speed? :fuss:

Ebay, if you're lucky it'll even be in good shape-Hurst doesn't make them new, and doesn/t list a service kit for them since they are discontinued. I got lucky and ran into a NOS one in the garage of a friend of my parents, same place I got a front chin spoiler hood scoop and nice new carpet. Any one need a carpet let me know- I'll send you pics, not red so it's not going in the Mach(kind of a gold color- sucks being color blind lol)

I agree with JoeyTheSaint...port those stock heads if you want to make any HP. You especially need to remove the EGR bump in each exhaust port, contour the valve stem guide in the bowl, and blend the bowl into the port. The link that Joey mentioned is a good one.

If you can swing $700 or so, you can pick up a set of high performance iron heads from Ford Racing or a set of CNC'd E7TE heads from these guys: http://www.powerheads.com/SB50.html

The roller rockers are good for a little power, but not nearly as much as a good roller cam. I'd pass on this one.

A good high-flow head is absolutely required to make power. You want less than 64cc combustion chamber volume in order to make compression.

Hey,
Just some thoughts here...
1) Seems like cash is a bit of an issue so here's a good idea... Don't do forged pistons... The way I see it your just wasting the money. Forged pistons certainly are not needed at the level of HP you will be generating. Your money will be way, way, better spent on the Heads as suggested above. Heads are critical to HP ability. I am running a set of Keith Black Hypertectic pistons in my 400 HP 351W. (The Keith Blacks are just a better quality cast piston) and they do a great job. get a good set of rings with them and your in business.

2) Do the Heads...
3) Dont do Forged Pistons...
4) Get a MATCHED cam with valve springs included.
5) Summit Racing has a nice inexpensive set of Roller Rockers. (Get the Summit Brand)

IMHO

The rebuild kit with forged pistons is the same price as the hyperutectic pistons, so I just assumed to get the forged pistons because the compression ratio is a bit higher.

The Edelbrock cam kit told me which part #s I need to go with for the valvesprings and timing chain, which is nice. I should be able to afford them at the end of this week. The cam and intake are matched.

I'll have to have a look at the Summit rockers, if I can afford them I will certainly add them.

Thank you so much for all of your help everyone. You are all making this a great deal easier.
