I am thinking about getting the Magnaflow Magnapack catback in a few months. With that catback, I want to be able to swap different mufflers (and straight pipes) in and out with ease. I was thinking I could order some plates (the loose plates that accept 2 bolts, connecting the ball/socket joints) from some company (or go to a junk yard and cut them off of some stangs) and then weld them onto the mufflers' inlet and outlet (in the straight pipe's situation, just have a pipe with a plate on each end). Here are some drawings I did below...maybe this will make more sense. Anywho...this is my question: Will this work and actually be worth my time? I have an impact wrench so I don't have to spend a lot of time unbolting and rebolting 8 bolts.

Another thing is...could I do the same with some cats? I want to be able to put in and take out cats on my Bassani X pipe.

actually bassani has a kit for you to be able to remove the cat and place straight pipes and swap them back and forth...

As for your first Q what exactly are you trying to get out of it  it would work but not sure why you want to do it
I want to be able to produce different sounds and easily swap out the mufflers depending on my mood that week. I am thinking about getting: powersticks, cherry bombs, flowmasters (already have, just have to make compatible), stock (already have), magnapacks, and straight pipes. That's 6 different sounds right there, well, maybe 4 or 5, because the powersticks and cherry bombs are probably the same?

i thought of the same thing because i have the SLP modular tubing, but i think it rides much closer to the driveshaft, having bullet-type resonators. im afraid that putting oval or square mufflers in there could cause clearance issues. not to mention i'd probably be dealing with exhaust leaks every time i made a switch.

Oh yeah, didn't think about that, damn.

if you really wanted to do it, you could have a muffler shop (a reputable one) mod the inlet/outlets of each muffler. then you could use the slip-fit design and band clamps. that could get pricey though.

i know what you mean about wanting a different exhaust tone. i used to LOVE my loudmouth, but after hearing a local guy with "just a prochamber n flows" i kinda wanted that sound too. i almost bought some mac flowpaths today, but figured the money could be spent better elsewhere. ie, rent.

What do you mean by slip-fit design? Is this what is used to match the down pipes of from the manifold to the actual X chamber of the bassani X pipe? The tubing has 4 slits in it and the down pipe fits snug into that tubing. A clamp is then tightened around the slits to secure them in place.

If so, that's too much work for bolting/unbolting a muffler to me. You have to use a mallet and a 2x4 to fit it into place.

yeah, thats the basic jist of it. except the "female" end of the tubing is tapered to be a bit more in circumference than 2.5" (the size of an aftermarket cat-back). this way you dont need a mallet and 2x4, just a little muscle. like these tubes for my SLP x-pipe that take the place of the cats.

the male end is 2.5", while the female end is tapered slightly larger and cut like so, to allow the band clamps to form a tight seal. i agree, it is a bit too much just to have the ability to interchange mufflers. but thats one waytto do it with out welding.

Awesome, I might look into this after getting the Magnapacks. Hell, I may even do it before if I can do it for cheap enough. I've been wanting an easy way (without cut-outs) to go from straight pipes and back easily.

Also...my x pipe has the exact same tapered ends, but I had to use a mallet and a 2x4 because it was rusted (WTF?!?! I thought it was SS!!!) and it didn't want to go on there very easily.

well, i thought taking out my resonators would be simple, but they were stuck on threre pretty good from all the heat and carbon build-up. it didnt help that i didnt use a lift and was just crawling on my back under the car, but i used some PB Blaster, waited about 30 minutes, and then put a little muscle into it and they came off. im sure if i used a lift it would have been much easier. truth is i didnt have any leverage at all while laying on my back cramped under the car.

but anyway, if an exhaust shop is capable of modifying either the inlets/outlets of your mufflers or the tubing going into and out of them like the above picture, then it could be done that way. the only other issue you may run into is alignment being slightly off between different resonators/mufflers due to overall dimensions (length being a big one) and inlet/outlet locations. if you undertake this project good luck and keep us updated.

Why not just get some exhaust dumps or whatever there called from jegs that let you open your exhaust up, there like 60 dollars
I think what you are referring to are cut-outs. These produce a much different sound than what I want. I want straight pipes all the way back so it reduces the drone, and has a more contained sound. Also -- I checked some of the cherry bombs out today and they kinda look like a powerstick, just a little different. I will consider these maybe when I get the magnapacks and see the inside of them.
