Muffler suggestion? (searched)

i know these questions are asked quiet abit, so i did a search and didnt see much under what im looking for. sorry if i missed something.

i have the combo in my sig. 306 with edelbrock heads/intake, 282hr cam, ect. o/r h-pipe, bbk equal length headers, and flowmaster 2 chambers. my car is DAMN loud now, to the point where ive started it twice on two different days now and both times i had one guy giving me ****, and one guy came to see what it was from 3 houses down.

dont get me wrong, i dont want it "quiet" but i want to tone the car down a bit to where it isint attracting neighbors everytime i start it. are spintech mufflers a good choice? ive heard people love the sportsmans muffler?

if not a spintech, what is a good muffler thats just a little quieter then a flowmaster 2 chamber with a nice unique sound? i definately want them to accent my cam at idle like my flowmasters do also.

Soundclips won't tell you much of anything; not only is the sound quality usually terrible, they won't tell you a thing about volume, quality of the sound, or those booming resonances that can occur.

The best you're gonna be able to do is keep asking for opinions and listening to others' cars live. Also, different set ups (heads, cams, exhaust configuration, shorties vs. long tubes, xpipe vs. h pipe, diameter, etc.) make a difference in both volume and quality of the sound. So it's not just the muffler that impacts sound - be careful when trying to compare to someone else's car. Said another way, when you hear that Stang with "X" brand mufflers whose sound you really like - simply putting that brand on yours won't guarantee that yours will sound like that one.

I'd recommend the Dynomax Super Turbos if you want to quiet it down. They're about the only one out there that's sure to tone it down a bit. Whether it will allow you to hear the cam at idle the way you want, or if it's loud enough will only be discovered when you put them on and see.

When it comes to exhaust systems, at some point you have to simply put them on and see what happens. I've had FlowMaster, Bassani, Magnaflow and SpinTech on mine - all too loud for me, or with funky resonances at certain rpm. I'm about to put on some stock take-off mufflers from a C5 Corvette. I think that will finally quiet it down enough for my delicate ears.

I have Dynomax Super Turbos on my car and I also have a couple of short videos for sound but I don't have a place that will host them to show you.

Your setup will be louder than mine due to the cam and heads and such.
The Spintechs are louder than the flowmasters.

Magnaflows sound really nice. Not too loud unless at WOT. If you want quiet, stay away from the magnapacks. Just get the regular magnaflows.

This is an example of the kinds of generalizations that are often made in an attempt to be helpful, that are simply inaccurate at best, misleading at worst. Both manufacturers make several different mufflers at different volume levels. The Flowmaster on mine was MUCH louder than the SpinTech set up I went with. As with many other bits of our cars - it's usually not possible to generalize. About the only constant I've seen/heard about is that long tubes will significantly reduce the booming resonance that occurs in the 1800-2100 rpm range with these engines.

And to Ole Whitey's point about Magnaflows - I went with that based on posts like this only to find on mine (single 3" system) when I replaced a tiny SpinTech resonator (in front of my SpinTech muffler) with a 4"X9"X18"L standard Magnaflow that it was louder than with the tiny SpinTech resonator. Go figure.

yeah i realize its a pretty wide based question.

im just trying to peacefully deal with a prick neighbor mainly, plus i dont want it to be excessivly loud. my car was idling for literally 1-2 minutes in my driveway at 8:32 pm and he came charging over bitching. now im getting dirty looks when the garage is open and im working on the car from him.

i was hoping to get a general idea of the sound of spintech's, ive seen one video on a dyno with side exhaust, and one of a 10 second drag car doing burnouts lol.

when i first got my car i had some mac flowpath mufflers i believe on there which i gave to my cousin for the flowmasters i have now. he still has them sitting there which im going to try again. hopefully they work out so it doesnt cost me any money to level things out.

thanks for your input. id be interested in hearing any soundclips reguardless of some spintech's if its not the damn drag car.

88 - you're doing the right thing. Whether he's being reasonable or not, having a long running fued with a neighbor over noise is a no-win proposition. It'll ultimately reduce your enjoyment of the car. Quiet it down - you'll be glad you did. It's my personal opinion that you won't find anything in SpinTech's catalog that's gonna be significantly quiet than the Flows. It's gonna take more muffler than that.

Do you have cats on the car? Sounds odd, but they do a good job at reducing volume - and the highflow units available offer virtually no flow restriction. You might consider putting a pair of high flow 3-way cats on it. That might do the trick without messing with the Flows.

Buddy, you have Flowmasters which are pretty much top of the line BBK being the best in my opinion. Unless you're getting tired of the drone sound coming from the back while driving on the highway, I wouldn't even take into consideration whatever that guy said to you about it being to loud. Bye the way, what exactly did he say???????????????

My self, I have a high degree cam with MAC shortie headers going through an "unknown brand" of h-pipe and cats, out the back into a MAC catback system. Needless to say, mine are loud also! I live in an apartment building. My girlfriend lives in the one next door and her apartment (8th floor) is right over the under ground garage door I drive out of. She can hear me leaving and up to 5 city blocks after that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's pretty damn loud! No wonder people look at me all the time.

The best is when I'm waiting for a light under a huge highway overpass by my place. The resounance is fantastic.

there are a few negative things about it getting even louder then before. first off, cop attention. im 17 and between that, my custom paint, and the noise i dont want to be hounded too bad by police attention. plus causing neighborhood problems isint a good thing either.

the neighbor said, there is a time and a place for this ***** and this isint it. i had JUST started the car and was moving it for the first time so i didnt react as i normally would. i just calmly told him i spent 4 weeks building it and i was going for a first drive. his responce was something along the lines of, i dont care how long people are trying to sleep. pretty unreasonable behavior from an adult i think, first time ive ever said a word to the guy. i dont know where im supposed to tow my car to start it

we just moved into this house like 2 months ago. i never drive through anywhere being an ******* with my car being loud. i come home in third gear at 25 mph under 1500 rpm no matter what time of the day it is. i never do stupid stuff with my car, it is just frustrating when you have prick people to deal with after you bust your ass for 4 weeks first thing. now who knows what everyone thinks, im probably the neighborhood dick with the loud car

To date I've run Mac Flow paths, Flowmasters 3 chambers, summit turbos, and dynomax turbos on a similiar system 1 5/8" shorties, 2 1/2" OR H and 2 1/2" cat back. The two turbo mufflers were the quietest by quite abit from the others but I have been looking into something else and have heard that Hooker Maxflows are very quiet at idle, don't drone and sound good at WOT. As was mentioned cam events and compression play a huge part in sound so my car may be different than yours but to be honest your cam is probably going to cause sound to be lower than mine. Cam that large is not going to have the cranking compression I had. Try to seek out a sound clip of the Maxflows...plus there only @$60/each

I second the Dynomax Ultraflos expensive but will tone it down until you get on it. I use bassani equal length shorties, bassani off-road x, and the ultraflo cat back. I had mac and flows on it before this has been the quietest of all my exhaust set ups and has a really good tone. You will still be heard but its not obnoxious.

My friend ran the 3 chamber flows on his car and it sounded almost stock other than the supercharger whine. I love to see the look on peoples faces at the track. His stock looking and sounding car rips off 9.80s at 140mph.

My neihbors are real cool about it just as long as im not standing on the gas at 9 pm in the drive way. Ofer them a beer and they just might pull the stick out of there ass.

Yeah f@ck him,,get some dyno-max racing bullets and take your tailpipes off "Just kidding" I agree with what some else said.There is a huge difference between 2 and 3 chambered flows.I dont know which ones Mike Yount had but I had 3 chambered Flowmasters.They are real close to the stock mufflers,but have that unique sound.

It sounds to me like this is the kind of guy that you won't be able to please even if your car was quieter. The fact that you are young and have a 5.0 with a custom paint job probably made him put a strike against you. Having one that isn't quieter than an electric golf cart just gave him another reason not to like you. However, in my experience with mufflers, and I've had a couple different Dynomax mufflers, Flowmaster 2 and 3 chambers, and currently magnaflows, the magnaflows are exactly what I was looking for. They are very mild at idle and low rpm, but sound very aggressive in the upper rpms, and I have long tubes and an off-road X-pipe and the rest of the mods in my sig. This is with the oval 4x9's, I believe.

Keep the mufflers and get a high flow h or x w/ cats. It will quiet it down significantly. I understand your situation. It is easy for someone on here to say "F *** that guy." However, you are the one that must live next to this guy and you have to ask is it worth it to battle with this guy after being in your new house after only two months? You can put on some high flow cats, quiet down your car, say to this guy " I spent $400 on my car because I want to show the people of this neighborhood that I respect their peace and quiet." You have done your good deed and shown you are attempting to cease any problems with your neighbors. If there is still a problem after that then you say F*** you, take off the cats, put on the off-road H, buy a line-lock button, and start smoking in front of this guys house. Good luck. There are no winners among the battle of neighbors.
