A little progress last night before bed. Working on removing the caked on, factory original timing cover gasket. This took a while. Consisted of applying gasket remover, waiting the necessary 30 mins for it to soften the gasket, and then scraping it off. Clean off and repeat a few times. I might do it one more time tonight.

Replacement core plug is installed.

Getting ready to wash block down with soap, and begin masking for paint.

I still need to chase out all these threaded holes as well. Just need to figure out the sizes I need first. The original bolts were a bit rusty, so they need to be replaced as well.

Nickel and dime

Paint done. It’s Ford gray. A little darker than I wanted, but not a big deal it’s not going to be that visible. I just didn’t want black.

Oil pump stuff has arrived. I’ll likely reuse the pickup. It was very clean to begin with. My entire pan was spotless. Mobil 1 oil is good stuff I guess

Pump, shaft and new ARP bolts because someone had them cheap on eBay

On deck. My Ed Curtis cam and timing chain and then degree it. Timing cover gaskets in the mail, and I’m gonna paint the cover that Eastwood cast aluminum paint I bought for the intake. Should be interesting

Oh...I am waiting for my 5/16 tread chaser to arrive. I also need new hardware.

Nickel and dime has begun

Tossed the camshaft in tonight. Thought it would go easily but hit a snag

Viola

And the damn camshaft dowel pin is too tight. I can get it in the camshaft. I measure the pin at .309, and the receiving hole at .305.

I don’t want to just send it home. I remember these bad Larry’s just sliding on it

Stopped to drink and overpriced IPA and to do some reading on the matter

It’s in.

Got brave. Had a drill but slightly smaller than hole. Pulled cam out, and ran the bit in and out a few times to deburr it. Seemed to do the trick. Dowel fit in now with a few taps of rubber mallet.

Comp supplies two pins a long and short. I know the long one is for the fuel pump on old carb cars, but any technical reason to not run one of it isn’t protruding past the gear?

Found my blue loctite and got the thrust plate installed. Chain on. Got an ARP bolt on the way and I need to degree this before locking it all down.

When I get some time I’ll oil up the new lifters and get those installed.

Time to go rake some leaves for a bit

So the comp Cams piston stop doesn’t fit a ford 302?

It works if you do this...butyou thibk you would be able to get both bolts on the slots

So while the stop does work on the above manner, I’m still scratching my head over this’s

Taken from “Thunderhead289”s video on degreeing the cam

And yet if I try the same...

I’ll just install like I did before with an oversized washer and call it a day

I only see one part number (4933) for the stop

Edit: realized I bought it off eBay. I suspect it’s a fake now

On deck, finish cleaning this up s tad and paint it. Not my original cover. Interestingly enough this cover is an e8 cover, while the original cover on my ‘88 was an e5 cover. Only very minor casting differences from what I can see. Since this one is cleaner to start... I’ll use it

Prepped the timing cover. That Eastwood cast coat paint is nice. I’ll use a lot of it on the bare AL parts

Haven’t degreed my cam yet. Stepson stole my degree wheel because he’s a DJ for Halloween and needed a record as a prop. I get it back Friday

Finally got a chance to sit down and degree the cam. Set it up dot to dot and everything checked out fine. I was within 1 degree on everything. Broke it down, set it up again and same results.

Ordered wrong ARP cam bolt so new one won’t be here til Monday.

My cam specs

So onto the timing cover install. I need to decide what to do about hardware. So I clean mine up or splurge for new. I took a peek at my water pump and decided time for new one, so I’ll pick one up and grab hardware and do this install next.

I used a bench grinder with a wire wheel to clean up most of the bolts during

Could prob clean em up...but most everything external will be new, and I’m doing new hardware most everywhere else

I don’t want to put too much effort into these

Slow day. I put the cam bolt in.

ARP pro series. Under $10 so I figure a little extra clamping force won’t hurt

Next phase, I need:

Hardware
Water pump

Looking forward, what to do about the fuel rails. Some steel wool and elbow grease?
