Build Thread My 1986 T-top Build - Lasting Memories

Looks like @Davedacarpainter needs to experiment with it, and answer all of this for us! If a guy can prove that putting the coilovers at the right angle can allow "good enough" street handling, I would be tempted to do it to my 2011 to put 325/335's under it. Pro touring style gets me all kinds of hot and bothered!

A C/O has a certain amount of play in the upper and lower mounts to allow for rearend shift/twist. Obviously, if you narrow the distance they are apart form each other, you lessen their ability to do that. The red car had mini tubs, the upper shock mounts were moved inboard to follow the inboard movement of the inner wheel tub. That resulted in a slight inboard angle of the shock.

For those that say a 275 will fit w/ no problems I'd say to what end? Once this car was tubbed, my 275 was an inch under the outer wheel lip. The tire didn't hit anything, regardless of how steep of a drive I entered, and the car could be lowered so far in the rear, the front couldn't be adjusted to accommodate the rake.

And it's blurry, I know, but in addition to all the side wall clearance on the outside, there was this much on the inside.

Were those mounts you made or were they part of a kit?
The top mount was simply a welded nut on the side that allowed a bolt to pass through the inside. I added the wonky top stud (that had to be bent to fit through the hole) to add triangulated strength to the mount, because the original mount only had the bolt secured to that weld plate.
In other words it was not double shear originally.

Only mount I really had to deal with is my lower control arm mount. I have to "redesign" Them because my housing cut was in it.

You're tubbing job is much larger than what I'm thinking about doing, Maybe add 1.25" at most to the tub. I'm wanting to maintain the shocks and springs seperate right now. Not so sure of the tire size that would fit with this idea.
I like @madmike1157 's idea of wheel fit. I want the tires to tuck up under the quarter. I've rolled the quarters already and beat the hell out of the inner tub and maybe, just maybe could fit 285's if I get a panhard bar to keep things centered.
BTW, I love what you have done to your car. It's just more than I want to do. I have to keep my rear seat to keep up with the story I told my wife about this being a car we can haul the grandkids in.
Having beat the crap out of the inner panels may offer more than just what the mini-tubbing 1.25" would do.
I guess I need to start measuring at least once, eh @Noobz347? Haven't heard from you, wondering what you think too.

I was reading an older thread here and it had a link to UPR's adjustable rear springs that are narrower than stock spring and mount in the original upper spring mount location. Hum...
I could mini-tub and keep springs seperate from shocks.
Thoughts? Anyone done this?
 
I am talking more about cornering, or auto crossing. I dont see where coilovers that far inboard could handle well with side to side motion, unless mounted at an angle to better handle the side to side weight transfer.
Moving coil overs inward will hurt side to side weight transfer big time. Your car would more or less teeter totter over the suspension in turns because the most force to be absorbed when the car is turning is near the outer edge of the vehicle. You don't need to mini tub a fox to get good handling on the track for road course or AutoX. For starters, you just need to be able to run some sticky 275 tires on all four corners, good steering, and excellent braking to make it perform well.

Not to start a whole new conversation, but, what would it take to fit 275's on the front. I haven't looked into this at all yet.
