My first time at the track...

I ran at the drag strip for the first time today. I took my 90 LX in my sig. It's mostly stock except for the few little things in my sig. It was fun and I ran about what I thought I would. I had one really bad run, but I didn't break anything. The car actually felt like it was running a little better on the way home, but that's probably just me. Ha ha, my car seems really quiet compared to the other cars at the track.

I've seen a lot of guys on here say to go around the water and just knock the rocks off, so I tried that and the guy told me that if I didn't go through the water and do a burn out, I would just spin; I backed up and did a burn out. Mods in sig (275/50 bfg t/a's).

Comments:
Run 1:
I was kinda nervous, but not really as bad as I thought I would be. I wasn't shaking or anything. I really had no idea what I was doing because I didn't know anyone there and haven't watched a lot. I had my drivers window down the first run because I didn't know to put it up.

Run 2:
I did better, so I was happy. Run 2 ended up being my best run of the day.

Run 3:
Not a lot to say. I did worse than run 2.

Run 4:
This run was horrible. My 60ft was terrible because I went to slam second and something happened. I'm still not really sure what went wrong, but it didn't go into 2nd gear, so I had to hit the clutch and jam it into 2nd and take off. I've been driving the car for 5 1/2 years, so I know how to drive it pretty well. Maybe it was nerves, I have no idea. I seemed to come back though (considering) and my mph was better than run 3. I would have beat the guy in the other lane if I didn't F up the 60ft, but I really wasn't paying a lot of attention to anyone on any of the runs.

Run 5:
I pretty much stayed to run the 5th one just because my 4th run was so bad. I tried really hard to concentrate on what I was doing so I could remember this time. I feathered the clutch from 2000rpm this time instead just dumping it as I did before (I think I did anyway). My 60ft still wasn't as good as run 2, so I don't know.

In general:

I ran my rear tires at 18psi and the fronts at 34psi. I had a sub box w/ 2 12" subs in it that probably weighs at least 50lbs; I was gonna take it out, but I didn't. I'm 130 lbs for what it's worth. I launched at 2000 rpm's each time, but I had a hard time remembering what I was doing (I was kinda just on auto pilot I think because the tree goes so fast, so I just went off of instinct. I think I just dumped the clutch the first 4 times. I was going to try to remember to power shift, but I never did because I forgot (so I was speed shifting). I shifted at around 5500 rpm as best I could tell.

My check engine light came on during one of the runs, but went off when I was slowing down. I also heard a noise the first couple times coming back from the run; it sounded like it was from the passenger side rear of the car like maybe the tire rubbing on something, but it was kinda like a whine. It did that the first couple of times, but went away after that.

All in all, how is my 60 ft w/ street tires? I don't plan to mod this car any more and don't plan to go to the track real often. I probably won't buy drag radials or anything. I've wanted to see what it would run for a while and now I know that it's slow. Anyone think I could hit 100mph with just driving and no mods?

I'll probably take the GT once I get the engine broken in all the way in a couple months. If I figure out how to drive, maybe I can get it into low 13's.

I get 2.2 or 2.1's with those very same tires on my car. If you run street tires avoid the water box all together drive around it if possible. The reason why is yes you do a short and i mean short burn out to dry the rears off but your front tires also picked up all that water. Now when you launch your front tires shed there water but your rears drive right over it and once again loose traction. It maybe a small thing but when i don't run my slicks it is something i try. Disconnecting or removing your front swaybar totally will also help your 60 foots.

i think you are taking your rear tires down way too far in pressure. with radial tires, you'll want to keep them up close to what you run normally, as when you under inflate them, you are just simply decreasing your contact patch. try a couple runs in the high 20's, low 30's.

when you are just starting off at the track, forget about reaction time. it doesn't affect your e/t and just make you focus less on what matters.

take out the sub box and disconnect the front sway bar (just for the night). keep practicing and you'll reach your goals

The best mod you could possibly do, for better track times, is slicks.

Go get yourself a set of 26" slicks and some 15"x7" steel wheels from a boneyard. I wouldn't personally even bother running at the track with street tires, or even drag radials for that matter. Slicks alone will get you into the 13s easily with that same setup.
