my heater core gave out again im mad

Last summer i replaced my heater on my 89 and it gave out again . im so pis@#d because it took me a long time and it was so difficult to do. now i have to pull all the dash out and start over. that really sucks. my core has a restrictor on the hose so i have no idea why it gave out so quickly. has this happened to any of you? are there any reasons for premature core failure? the good thing is that summer is coming again and i wont need it but when winter comes again i dont know what im gonna do. im just gonna bypass it for now and i'll decide if i ever do it again because i dont even think its worth it. my car is heating up quickly now until tonight when i bypass the darn hoses. im just mad.

It's much easier to replace the second and third time around.

You are not alone with this. My 89 has had about 5 cores in its lifetime and is never winter driven. My last one lasted 1 season, had to pull the motor out, went to remove the inlet hose and the piping came out with it. I have it bypassed for now. Guess I will not have any latenight, early spring cruises until it is replaced. Good luck.

Are you guys putting the restrictor orifice back into the heater core lie when you chnge the hoses and/or core? There's a pice of metal with a hole in it that goes into one of the small lined attatched to the heater core. It's there to slow flow volume to extend the life of the core.

I did use a restrictor but I guess it was of no use. Oh well my heater will just have to be put into storage for the rest of its life. Heaters are just problems. I'm thinking of cutting up the firewall and making a plate that I can easily remove to remove the heater core. Could be a good idea. Has anyone done this?

You start cutting up the firewall and you will severely weaken the structural integrety of it. If you are willing to play with that by all means go for it, but just keep that in mind.

Great idea for the plate. As for weakening the structure i would think a properly designed plate would keep that from happening. However, to make all your marks and measurements you'll still hafta pull ur dash lol. Good Luck

lol. well yeah I would have to pull it but it would be for the last time though. I would just cut up a hole just big enough to be able to pull the core maybe about 2 1/2 x 8 inches. I dont think that would weaken the integrity of the firewall.

I have a link at home that gives a 'how to' on cutting a 'door' into the air box so that you can replace the core without removing the whole assembly. If I remember, I'll post it up this evening so you guys can check it out.

that would be real cool. last time it took me 2 weeks to do the job, driving with all the dash apart and I dont think i can do it again or at least keep replacing those things every year.

always make sure you reinstall the heater core ground strap also.it's there for a reason believe it or not.
