My LS1 Notch Project (DUW)

I really don't understand what the big deal is. Recently, I have a new found HATE or most mustang drivers. I think most mustang guys are just in it for the social aspect of it, not to actually go fast or win a single race, or even race for that matter. The other night, I was so embarrassed to even own a foxbody because most all the mustang guys around here are pure punks.

I go with my buddy's taking out our F-bodies. Well, my one buddy is looking to get in a race with something worthy after doing his H/C/I and new bottom end on his Z28 with a 150shot. We know the imports are a pure waste of time so we see a bunch of mostly fox bodies. I THOUGHT FOX BODY GUYS WERE THE TRUE MUSTANG GUYS but all we found was a bunch of whiny punks that had f-body-fobia. Come out on ET Drags and straightpipes but yet don't streetrace or some crap like that. One claimed to have beat my buddy's car before, but wouldn't try it agian, the others talked about racing, but wanted to wait a while because "right now I'm chillin' " is how he put it. Then some other foxbody guys pull up, and these want to race, but here's the catch. Now this is the mustang bigshot wanna bee racer game. What they do is insist it's for money, and then debate how the race is going to be run, and then raise the amount of money and debate things between them to buy time and keep raising the money value until someone backs out. It's all about show, not about the actuall race. If someone comes out in race trim, but then won't race, that makes them a poser. I've never been called out and not raced, I have more pride in that.

Oh boy - here we go again - another 20 page thread where everyone just whines and complains...

Let me make this real simple for everyone to understand so we can put this to rest and move on...

1. The work that was done to install an LS1 in a fox body is quite impressive technology wise. Nice work!

2. In raw form, an LS1 will ALWAYS be a better power plant than a Ford 302. But don't forget, the LT1 didn't come out until '92. Before that, Ford was king. Face it - if Ford had continued to refine their pushrod engine like GM did, they might have been able to keep up with GM, but they went in a different direction when they decided to develop the 4.6 modular.

3. This is a Ford forum, not a hotrod forum. If people didn't care about Ford cars and their heratage, they would join a hot rod forum. This is why this thread is filled with a bunch of bashing. Stangnet is not a hot rod forum. We normally do not talk about Chevy engines shoe horned into Ford and Dodge cars and vise-versa. People here appreciate Ford technology - not GM or Mopar. So - yes - people here WLL bash this project. It's just the way it is and everyone has their own opinions. This forum brings together Ford people - not a mixture of performance guys. It's the specific audience that is being addressed.

4. To sum it all up, Numbles - Wow - nice work doing what you did - but not everyone on this particular forum will appreciate the end result.

hopefully you aren't implying those thoughts about us on SN.. those guys are just retards, not real car guys.. as far as racing/ not racing goes... it can depend on wether the guy is race trim for the track or for the street.. i'll go hangout at the car spot where everybody and there grandma is.. with the hotrods and the ricers.. the posers and the jackasses.. but if someone comes up to me and challenges me to street race.. i simply say no.. why? because i don't street race.. :Track:

Yeah, you have a point, no I didn't mean everyone, but I was just dissapointed because most foxbody guys I know are pretty hardcore and WILL race. I remeber when I drove my foxbody to the f-body convention, none of them wanted any of my ported stock headed N/A three hundred cubic inches because they were afraid of getting beat in front of all their buddies. These guys would talk about racing, and how they pulled my buddy Joe's car, but sure wern't ready to do it again. What was funny is the guy who wanted to race for money said "My all motor against the LT1 on spray" which would have been easy money all it was is a 302 based H/C/I car. However, they couldn't come up with a place to race, or a set amount of money. Punks come in all groupes. Taking it to the track, I'm all for it, but if you claim to be a street racer, you have to race on the street. Right or wrong, it's just the way that it is.

i agree.. you have to back up what you said and follow through your obligations of your self imposed "title" of street racer..

Well said. :nice:

NICE CAR. but dont forget that in 1987 "car and driver"
(i think it was) ran the 87 EFI 302CI mustang gt against the 87 EFI 350ci IROC and it was just about dead even so.... you cant compare 15 year old tech against brand new stuff and start talking about
"stock for stock"
nice job though

I always thought a stock LS1 with alllll the boltons and a Z06 cam would be a good sleeper. Not a modded one that lopes or anything, just something that the average person wouldnt pick up on, they think it's a 240 rwhp bolton 5.0 when it's really a 375 rwhp, or hell, 390 or more if it's a LS6 headed setup car that just sounds like it has exhuast.

Light weight engine setup, sleeeeeper! The big all out modded LS1 in a fox body doesnt appeal to me much though.

Welcome to street racing!

This is why I stopped attending any sort of so-called street race gathering 10years ago.

I still remember one young kid that was going to put his gold chain on the line along with emptying his bank account to prove he could beat my buddies stock hatch that ran a consistent 14.20.

the 69 goat was a barn fresh ride on snow tires. I said look, how about a quick 50 bucks and we pop. No one had any hidden secrets and we walked the goat by 8 cars.

Very rarely do you sit down with someone in under 5 mins. This is also why I called it cheap; I just wanted to see a race.

Update: Just took the mustang on is first trip around the block in 6 months. Open headers and all. The car never hooked. I havent gotten an alignment but the car drives straight when I let go of the wheel.

Took it to street that usually doesn't have any traffic. Spun through first, cracked second and spun to the rev limiter, hit third and was still going sideways down the street. LOL. At that point I took it back to the house because open headers in the suburbs of chicago usually gets you a ticket.

The suspension is setup good. The 96+ spindles dont rub at all like ive been told although they are about 1/4" away from the control arm at full lock. I wonder how close they will get at full compression.

But I think its safe to say I finally finished the project except for some small things.

I have to fix a power steering leak. Connect the electric fan relay. Calibrate the spedometer. And get the catback exhaust and x-pipe on.

Hopefully I get through with finals and get the car fully setup to run and well get some dyno #'s and track times.

Thanks for the comments, Ill have some videos up soon.

Dan.

I dont have any exhaust right now. Open header on the passenger side. Factory manifold on the drivers side that has been cut down to clear the steering shaft. The drivers side header is getting modified this week so the headers will be done this week. Im going with an x-pipe(when I buy it) and mac mufflers dumped. The x-pipe will be a dr gas x. They are pretty universal since you have to get them all welded up after you buy it. So im not anticipating any problems with that.

Eventually the setup will be B&B tri folws with the x-pipe with tails.

I finally got the car to the point where I can just jump in and take it around the block. Its been well worth the wait. The car really pulls and just doesn't want to stop. I was only brave enough to top off 2nd gear because of no alignment. Thats about 80 mph with a 3.27 gear and a 2.66 first gear. And that was spinning and hooking at the same time. Im gonna need some MT's when I finally get the kit on the car.

Wow, some of you are speaking in tones that resemble how a racist person would speak about the races they hate, but instead of people, we're talking cars. It's rediculous - "If you think this is a good project, you're not a true mustang fan?" (or whatever the quote was)

I love mustangs to death, and have since my dad told me stores of his '70 Boss 302 when I was only four years old. The only cars I've owned since I've started driving have been Mustangs, and they will continue to be mustangs. I appreciate every single body style, right down to the Mustang II.

But because I think this guy has an awesome, out-of-the-ordinary project car that would be a killer street monster, I'm not a true mustang fan? lmao

Some of you guys need to get your heads out of your asses. This guy put a lot of hard work into this, and I bet 3/4ths of the people bitching Numbles out couldn't even comprehend how to make a project like this work without coming here to ask tons of questions before giving up. :Zip2: I hope that someday, I have the skills and knowledge to do something like this - I'd use an LS7 or something though. ;)

Give credit when credit is due. They're just cars people, not gods.

Why not just do a 351W or a stroker and be like 95% of all the other fox mustangs out there? Oh wait, nm, answered my own question. :)

Great job again Numbles, and get those videos up asap - have you got to drive it yet? (Sorry if you already answered it, I forgot amongst all the angry comments that have flooded your progress threat of hard work)

If you must know I am racist. Actually, all of my comments are racist. You just have to read in between the lines. I hate idiots.
