Well, I'm finally ready to start posting some information on my turbo build. This will be a winter long project and I will keep updating this thread with progress pics and info.

Car:
1970 Mustang Grande:
- 351W Rebuilt stock bottom end
- 9.5:1 compression
- Ported stock heads, machined for 1.96/1.60 valves
- Isky Cam, 228* Duration at .05”
- Stock T5 from a 88GT
- Taurus Fan
- Megasquirt EFI

Goals:
For now, I'd like to run 400HP at 6PSI but I want to build everything so that I can turn up the boost to approx 18PSI for 600HP at a later date when the engine and transmission have been built to handle that kind of power.


Parts:
There will be many parts involved, but the big ones include:
-Partially built Turbo Hotside kit from Dustin AKA 10secgoal
-Master Power T70 Turbo (good for 650-700HP)
-Tial 38mm Wastegate
-Ebay 3”x12”x31” intercooler(Good to about 800hp)
-Ebay Blow off valve (I’ll switch to a Tial if I’m not happy with it)

Here's a pic of the hotside parts from Dustin (10secgoal). Since he doesn't currently build a kit in the configuration I want to run (I want to use an intercooler) I only got him to build up to the merge pipe. The rest I will have to do on my own.

Work done in advance:
I’ve been planning a forced induction project for a while now, so I’ve done a little work in advance. I’ve already done a Megasquirt EFI conversion with wideband sensor and a fuel system good to 600hp. So the tuning should be fairly easy and I’ve already got the fuel system in place. I’ve also installed sub frame connectors, and rebuilt the stock 9” rear axle to help handle the power. The car also has new stock style suspension, and is lowered about 2.5”.


Progress so far:

This doesn’t look like much but it represents a fair amount of work. Not only has the engine bay been nearly gutted, but the battery has been moved to the trunk and everything the used to be on the passenger fender wall (Voltage regulator, starter solenoid, wiring, etc) has either been eliminated or relocated.

I had to trim the “wing” on the driver side shock tower to clear the header. Here’s a pic of the passenger side (untrimmed). If you look closely you’ll notice some idiot before me cut a hole in the tower in for easier access to the grease fitting

Great you're doing it this winter! :nice: I'll be watching closely as I'm probably ready to copy you next fall when I'm planning a rebuild of my 351W. Lower compression pistons, forged crank and another cam is in the parts list, but it will depend on your findings whether it's a turbo & IC or a screw type SC that goes in too.
This winter the EFI + N2O is going in, complete intake is ready on the workbench.
 
can you tell more about your plans? are you going to use two turbos, or one turbo for both manifolds? How did you pick turbo, just at random or did you do any computation behind it? are you going with stock compression? what about carb?
 
Just curious, what times (or how much HP/torque) did it run it the configuration it's in now (EFI/nitrous). I'm just wondering how much of an increase you're looking for.

Are you from Kelowna? I swear i've seen the car before at a car show there.

It will be a single turbo. Both exhaust manifolds/headers will merge together to spin the turbo.

I picked the turbo mostly by reading at www.turbomustangs.com it seems to be one of the favorites for a single turbo small block V8. They are a company from Brazil, and from what I've read they make a good product at a reasonable price.

For now, I'm keeping the stock compression of 9.5:1. When I build the motor for 15+ PSI It will have a lower compression, probably 8.5:1

The car doesn't have a carb, it's EFI using a holley 900cfm TBI injection unit. The type of EFI system I have let's me tune the car with my laptop.

I've never had the car dyno'd and only took it to the track once about 6 years ago... so unfortunately I don't have numbers. I will be removing the nitrous (150 HP shot). I hope to match the HP made by the nitrous at 6psi of boost.

It finally happened! Someone recognized the car because they've seen it in person. Yes, I do live in Kelowna and have attended car shows in the area (tho not many the last couple of years).

I was only there visiting there from north vancouver. Maybe next year i'll see you at mission... good luck with the build! I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.
 
I'll be following along too, hoping to do something similar. I've got the same torched holes on my shock towers for the grease fittings, was a common practice.


find a fender washer as close to the thickness of the shock tower as possible and slightly bigger than the hole, cut the hole out to match the washer then weld the washer in, once you have the washer welded in you can weld up the center of it, then grind the welds down on both side of the tower and no one will ever know there was a hole there.

you could try to cut a patch from a similar thickness piece of sheetmetal but it's way too hard to cut something that thick into that small a shape.
