ok im wanting a pretty big cam that will pull hard to 6k and still have decent street manners, im going to have 4.10's so this isnt that big of an issue.. BUT!! Im having a hard time deciding on a cam here, the combo is a ported/poilshed gtp combo with springs, a typhoon intake, and all the bolt ons..

so does anybody have a good recomendation for a nice cam that will drive decent, and still pull hard to 6k?

I really dont care about the price unless its more than $300....

thanks josh

I'll be running an X as well. It's old school and there's way better out there but i got it for cheap and it does get the job done. Something duel pattern would be better, like a Stage 1. The X is gonna scream on the top end but is gonna give up some on the bottom end vs. the Stage 1.

Had Ed Curtis grind me one, love it. Was over 300 but imho you cant beat custom... Not sure its necessary at your power level yet but I dont think I'll go elsewhere :nice:

Oh.... Is that his peak numbers, or did he analyze the entire curve?

Well don't get me wrong, i would swear by custom cams for getting the most out of a combo, but for some reason it made a crap load less torque and only 15hp more than the X303 did, and it's a duel pattern 580ish lift on the intake and 620ish on the exhaust. The guys running the dyno said that Ed's cams are notorious for making great peak HP numbers but being soft on the torque side.

That makes me the inverse of happy... now I might have to check it out...:(

I was pretty steadfast about Ed's abilities even after my former tuner also told me he would rather see me go with a trick flow cam... great...

That is funny:) They are likely trying to make a sale of their own camshaft. I often wonder how many "Ed" cam's he has even dyno'ed in order to make such a comparison:shrug:

You have to look at the goals given to the guy who is spec'ing the camshaft. The cam can only be as good as the buyer gave information.

The average hp/tq is where it is at in the powerband. Just as well, the custom cam

To the original poster, the answer is easy.

For $325, go with a custom cam from www.flowtechinduction.com.

That is $25 more than you wanted to spend, but you get more average performance, better driveability, better vacuum.

In many street cases, the higher lift helps driveability. It really is not a determiner of how "big" the camshaft is.

Even with my 110% daily driver cam (that is what I told Ed), AFR 165's and a regular Performer intake, I routinely was beating cars with lots of weight reduction, slicks, etc. I got blamed for running a stroker lots of time on the streets.

One even said, "where is the nitrous switch?"

Your tuner probably does not know who he is.

I have two guesses why he said what he did:

1. You were going to get the cam through him.
2. That is all he is familiar with.

Trickflow cam's are great for a budget, but they cannot compare to a custom, except in price.

Any good custom cam grinder is going to overshadow a trickflow.

Well, i don't wanna name a bunch of names, and let me make it totally clear that i'm not bashing Ed in any way shape or form, i'm only going by this particular case and who knows why it is how it is. Also let me assure you, the guys who tuned the engine are top notch, easily among the best in our tristate area so they know their stuff and with the popularity of Eds cams, i'm sure they've done at least a few of their cams to know.

As for the goals of the engine, it's a 347 with Edelbrock Victor Jr heads and a Systemax intake and all the associated goodies to make it all work right. Lets just say the numbers were disappointing. When the cam was ordered it was to be for a STREET performance setup. Now, for whatever reason this combo made less torque and only 15hp more than his last 347 made with GT40P heads and a Typhoon intake with the afore mentioned X303 cam. It totally baffled all of us, including the guys tuning the engine. Right now my buddy is pretty much back to the drawing board and searching for some kind of phantom problem as to why it made such low numbers.
