Any new Verizon phone will work on Straight Talk. Straight Talk will tell you it won't (because the fine folks of Wal-Mart are not tech savvy), but it will work. Verizon signed an FCC deal a year or two ago requiring all global phones be sim unlocked. So....if it's Note 2 or higher, it should work on Straight Talk, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc right out of the box. Just plug in Straight Talk APN settings for either AT&T or T-Mobile towers (it won't connect to Verizon towers through Straight Talk because it's a 4G phone).
So, to re-cap...tell the fine folks at Straight Talk you have a AT&T or T-Mobile phone (depending on which one gets better service in your area), activate the sim, and plug in the APN settings and you're good to go.
As for phone, I'd go with a S5, G3, or HTC One M8. I've used all 3 and recommend the S5 over the others. Get a Life Proof case and you're good to go.
