Need help ASAP

I'm in the middle of working on my car and I need some help. In the attached picture I was wondering what the box with two holes in the top is. I was thinking it is the charcoal canister for the smog pump, but I am not sure. If it is do I really need it since the smog pump is gone? Thanks in advance.

Yep... looks like the cannister.

charcoal canister, should have a line from the gas tank, that goes to near the firewalll and another line that goes to the upper intake, with a purge valve in between.

from what i've heard, you don't need it, but the only side effect is that pressure will build in your gas tank, making it sound like your opening a pop bottle when you take your gas cap off to fill up. no real harm though.

yup i can confirm that on my gt. makes some noise when i take the cap off but i've never had any problems as result.
