Im getting ready to rebuild my T5. Ive opended it up and need to know what extra parts to order along with the basic rebuild kit.
The trannys reverse doesnt work, and its had a few problems shifting from 3rd gear. I see there is a gear on the cluster set that has several teeth completely gone, and one gear on the main set where all the teeth seem to have wear on the one side.

The pics show what I am talkng about. Any info would really help.

Thanks!

I can't tell for sure from the pics but I'm pretty sure your cluster gear is the one with the damaged gear teeth - ~$300 to replace.

Yeh,

I need a new cluster gear, and reverse gear. The cluster is missing teeth and the reverse gears teeth are all smashed on the front.

What else should I look for? This is my first rebuild. As far as I can tell, nothing looks damaged. Is there anything I should look for on the syncros?

Ya, you do need a new cluster gear and reverse. Check all the gears for excessive wear, they will cause whinning. Check the front of the main shaft that rides in the input shaft for wear. Check the shift forks for cracks. I like to put steal input bearing retainers in. Also check the dog teeth on the gears, if they are rounded on the end like the reverse gear replace them.

Hanlon Motorsports seels a rebuild video for less than $20. It's very good and I highly recommend you buy it to be sure yo9u get things together right. Also, when reassembling all the bearings, I like to keep about .001"-.002" of preload on the bearings to keep things tight. Drive the trans sanely for a couple hundred miles and the bearings will set up and you will have a nice tight trans - this helps, especially on the input bearing.

If you are replacing the main bottom cluster (which is trash according to your pics) you also need to replace the imput shaft, and while your at it buy a new 2nd/3rd gear kit...

You may find with all the parts you need to buy (Over $550 in parts, inlcuding a master rebuild kit) it will be better to get a new tranny.... Check out D&D and Hanlon, I thought a good T-5 was under $800
