auto- 5spd swap. I know the blocks were switched in mid year along with the tranmissions. My question is will both trannys offered that year fit on both motors? I know the flex plate is different due to the number of bolts is that the main difference. I found a 3650 for a good price is why I am asking. during that year which were the two transmissions offered? which was better and why? any help would be great. I have many parts to get it done just need a few main ones to include the transmission.

Look at your producation date on your sticker when you open the left door.

They are very similer. The TR3650 has a higher torque rating. They both have their fair share of common problems even when they were new or not abused. Grinding gears, poping out of reverse etc...
The TR3650 has a bottom drain plug. The T45 has a side mounted drain plug.
They both use ATF fluid holding just under 4 quarts.

my question is can you put eithertrans on my engine regardless. would a 3650 work on a pre 2/21/01 motor without any adapters of brackets. Probably a silly question but I dont know much about the mod motors yet. I just found a 3650 rebuilt for $610 and thought it would be a good deal for my swap.
