Need help

Cobra is probably the cheapest- use if you are on a budget. Easy fitment, just like OEM
Wilwood or Baer are excellent, but you pay for it. And wheel clearance can be an issue.

Figure out what your budget is and that will tell you what path you need to go.

I am thinking $2500-3 max for the brakes, I don't have the 5 lug wheels yet so I can get ones that will fit. I just want great performance with out going over the top. I had brembo 6pistons on my last car but it also was 1Klbs more. I like the cobra r's with the brembos but I am not sure if they are much better then the the regular cobras for the money.

My vote is Wilwood too! :nice:

Fronts I went 5-lug conversion using 94-95 spindles, 03 cobra calipers, 13" cross drilled & slotted rotors.

For the rear I did 5-lug disks using stock fox axles, modified 94-95 caliper mounting brackets, and stock GT calipers and cross drilled & slotted rotors. Also installed a 94-95 master & booster. Spent way under the 3k you want to spend.

I need to upgrade the brakes on the cobra and go 5 lug, what should I go with?

a) 96-> cobra f&r
b) Cobra r front and reg. cobra rears
c) Wilwood front(superlite 6) + ??? Rear (over kill?)
d) ???

Cobra should be pleanty good all the way around. I can feel my seat belt holding me in for sure sometimes when I'm coming down from 130+ lol peaced it all together for about 1500. Calipers, and rotors were bought new. 95 Cobra booster. Bought the rear disc kit off ebay, and just got cobra brackets for the rear to fit. Everything was bought off E-Bay.

Even for track usage, 94-04 Cobra brakes are more than sufficient, especially for a relatively light (in comparison) Fox body. Brakes don't stop the car, tires do -- so get big enough brakes to suit your purposes without any fade, and use the rest of your budget for other toys.

That was what I was thinking given the light weight of the fox body, wilwoods would be "cool" but major over kill (for me). After all the car is mainly just a weekend street car. I think I am leaning towards cobra R front and 94-04 cobra in the rear. The upgrade was more from a safety stand point, it's so easy to bump up power but brakes always seem to be last on the list untill you have a close call one day and go "yeah I really need to upgrade those brakes"

Any of you guys use a 2000 cobra r front kit?

its a brembo kit... imo just the regular cobra brakes will be way more than enough for your fox, do braided lines with them and you'll stop on a dime, it was one of the best modifications I did to my 98gt... I had problems stopping with the stock brakes, and I kept warping rotors, after I switched to the 13in cobra rotors and dual piston calipers and braided lines never warped another rotor or had problems stopping (unless I locked the brakes up :) and those brakes saved me and my car from other dumbasses on the road many o time :)

Yeah that seems to be the best bang for the buck, well now on to what wheels to buy for the swap....

As an alternative on the rear - this guy http://www.northracecars.com/ offers a bracket that will allow you to run Fox width axles (ranger or Aerostar or new ones) with cobra disc brakes so you don't need to get special offset rims.

I sourced all my stuff from different places and I'm pretty sure I've got less than $1K in my cobra brakes front and rear. Only parts that were used were the axles... Watch Ebay and other classifieds. Another good brake source is www.discbrakesrus.com ...

Thats good to know but the 93 cobra has the same width rear end as 94-98 cars, so it's a stright axle swap. I'll check them out for all the other parts thanks.

"yeah I really need to upgrade those brakes"

yeah i really need to upgrade those brakes of mine. but i like to threash hold from the start finish line@130 to make the chicain @35. oh and evryone should do there brakes durring lunch at least once. im 3 for 3 so far 3 track days 3times doing brakes durring lunch

I have Cobra brakes on my 92GT and use my car for open track events. I am extremely hard on my brakes. I set the brakes on my '03 Cobra on fire during a track day at PIR. I have the same brakes on my GT and so far, I have not had any problems with fade etc...

Unless you are planning to race professionally, anything more than Cobra brakes on a fox body is just so people will think you are cool.

Like Dave, said tires are what stop a car. Do the Cobra/5 lug upgrade and buy some sticky tires and you should be satisfied.

Keith that is exactly what I need to hear! I agree with both you and Dav tires are by far the key factor....Thanks guys!
