Need some help fellas....whine noise after gear install...Deceleration Only

ok i got my FMS 3.73's installed last thurs with a custom diablo chip. i'm an automatic so i needed the chip. Anyways, he told me before i even got in the car that there is some whining ONLY WHEN DECELERATING from 50mph to 30mph and not to worry it is normal and that it wasn't coming from the gears it was coming from the tranny. Now he did do some tranny stuff with the chip , line pressure shift points whatever....my question is WHAT is really causing the whine?? is he correct or what? am i ok? sorry for the long post

i JUST got off the phone with him...he said it is normal with AOD trannys and that every car is diffrent some make noise some don't. If i put the car in neutral the noise goes away so he said that it isn't the gears. so now what?

That's not necessarily true. In neutral, there is no load on the rearend. Can he give the readings he took for backlash and runout? Also pinion bearing preload (new or used?). See if you can get those numbers from him, and post them.
It may very well be the tranny, but putting it in neutral doesn't isolate one from the other.
He's right about it being fairly normal. Some have little or no whine, some have more. I guess it's what you're willing to live with. Mine has a very small amount of whine at highway speeds...barely audible, and I know mine was installed correctly.

So it won't hurt my car in any way then? assuming that the install was done correctly?

If it was done correctly, you should have no rear end related problems. Just keep an ear on it, see if it changes -- louder, quieter, broader rpm range, anything. Keep him informed it gets worse. But my guess is, you'll be fine.

How do like it otherwise? I think this mod is the best mod for the money, hands down!

i LOVE THEM man.....lol can't believe i waited so long before getting them. Nice to be able to squawk 2nd now for the first time. I'm just real protective of my stang and hate it when i hear anything out of the ordinary...just do'nt want anything to happen to her. :D

i had the gear whine. my mecjanic who did the install said it was normal for the first few miles to whine. if after ~100-200 miles it still whines, then i would think somthing is wrong. and the whine you hear IS from the gears, not the tranny

It's all related to the contact pattern on the front and back side of the ring gear. Your tech may have set it up so that the pinion gear rides closer the toe or the heel of the ring gear. Do a search on ring gear setups on the net. There's alot out there that explains this stuff.

Just had 4.30 gears installed in my 97 with no gear whine. I was told by the installer that the contact pattern has everything to do with gear whine. The installer on mine had a colored lube that he put on the gear to test the contact. The contact should be in the middle of the tooth depthwise, and centered from the top to bottom of the tooth.

Problems from misaligned gears are excessive noise and a shorter gear life. Better to get them done right the first time.

My tranny whines when I decelerate at any point as well as my rear end, if I engine break and get up to 4k rpm's my g/f makes fun of my car saying it sounds like a jet airplane landing the tranny howls as well when I accelerate normally I've had it checked out and everyone says it's fine they have all said some make noise and some don't. My tranny is stock 5 speed and my rear end is stock. I've put 12k on it since I bought it and it has never given me a problem.

GL on it hopefully it won't be given you any problems
