I just put in my stroker, been messing with the timing and carb.Im using my old 750 cfm because the new prepped carb is jstted too rich for break in(so im told).the car keeps popping through the carb and the exhaust.I know everybody's gremlin is timing,i know how it works and how to get close and I've done it before, but this just doesnt sound right. It revs slowly and my exhaust that used to sound nasty with the Edelbrock cam now sounds like a damn tug boat.I've pulled the #1 plug, found TDC,checked all the wires blah blah blah.Is this thing that far off??? :bang:

With the engine popping like that the first thing I would do is put a timing light on it to see where it is. It could be way off. Next, are the plugs burning too leanly? Take a look at them and let us know. Popping like that can be a sign of a lean condition also. How is the exhaust burning? What does it look and smell like? Have you tried rotating the distributor by hand to see if it smoothes out? As someone else mentioned, are you sure that the distributor was installed correctly – it could e a 180 degrees off……..get a timing light on that sucker.

Is the dizzy off 180*?

Usually a backfire is caused from a too lean condition or a retarted timing situation.
I know the dist. is in correct(now) Well, im guessing the carb is part problem, maybe a intake leak too????

QUOTE:Re-adjust your valves.

I would hope to assume the valves were adjusted by the engine builder, but i'll do that again after the break in is done.

I put a light on yesterday,(but its still hard to start)and when i advance it it does get smoohter, right now its only at 32 total and im still messing with it.Im gonna get the feed line for the 750 Hp and put that on today, since ists brand new and been flowed etc. and see if that helps.

Thanks for the info, ill keep messing with it today :hail2:

It definatly sounds like a timing issue. Either firing order is off, bad wire, crossfiring, or the valves are too tight.

The builder could have adjusted them tighter from the lifters being empty until initial start up causing the valves to hang open loosing compression.

I think thats sounds like the best possibility so far.I HATE ADJUSTING VALVES :notnice: ,but luckily i have a old v/c thats cut open and i just let it idle and adjust till the noise is gone, but its still messy.
