New GT Owner

I've loved the Mustang ever since I saw the first one in a Ford showroom in May 1964. I was 8 years old. Now I've got one. This one has everything, including HIDs. Manual shift of course...

The only thing I want to change on it are the mufflers. Something with a good sound, no drone that won't be annoying with the top down. I'm looking at Borla ovals, Flowmasters, or the Ford/Shelby GTAs. Opinions? The GTAs and the Flowmasters cost half of what the Borlas cost.

Congrats..looks great.check out you tube for sound clips..I f you dont like low range drone and sounds like its raising hell at high rpm, dont get Magnapacks!! I love mine though and wouldnt change them for nothing..

Congrats! Looking good! Definitely stay away from the SLP Loudmouths or other muffler delete kits. Its actually reasonably quiet with the windows closed, but pretty loud with the windows open.

i have flowmasters. they have drone really bad at around 60 -70 mph. i just turn up the radio.

never had this problem with my car.

i love the flowmasters. add an off road H pipe and it is

Very nice purchase
I am running the same exhaust setup as bigcat and I love it! It does get mildly obnoxious under certain conditions, but if I'm not trying to hold a conversation I just There are many times I never have the stereo on just so I can hear it uninterupted

Thanks for the compliments and info. I'm loving this car!

I listened to both GTAs and Flowmasters on Youtube today. I listened using headphones to get the best possible idea of what these sound like. I liked the outside sound of the Flowmasters the best. They just kind of have that '60s low rumble.

The other thing I'm trying to get my head around is 5w20 oil. I've been driving Euro cars for the past 10 years and those usually call for 5W40. I'm tempted to run a full syn 0w30 in it. I visited the Bob is the oil guy web site and saw some good UOAs for the Ford 5w20, so I guess the engineers know what they're doing... It sure seems worrisome to run an oil that light though.

Congrats! I was 9 in 64 and I'm on my 3rd Mustang, first car was a 66. Good color choice too! Went with the SLP Loudmouths myself. Might be too loud for you though as they are just straight pipes, but I love the way it sounds. Only hassle is having to put the mufflers back on once a year to get the car inspected. Here in NC you have to have actual mufflers on the car for it to pass. My sister (61 years old) has a 07 Torch red GT vert and a 07 Alloy GT coupe. She had a muffler shop put Flowmasters on ahead of the rear axle on the coupe. Louder than stock but not as loud as the SLP's, think she paid about $450 to have it done.

The GTAs sound a bit tamer than the Flowmasters, and I'm thinking they might be the better choice for a convertible.

One other question: Would I be better off running a full syn 0w30 oil in this car, or is 5w20 the way to go? Then there's the full syn 0w20 oils. I can't seem to get a definitive answer on this. I wonder what the Ford engineers run in their cars...

Fellow Virginian,

Be careful about changing your exhaust...you may end up getting more rumble and droning than you bargained for...and that can be irritating to you. I think the Ford engineers designed the perfect note on the stock exhaust, just enough oomph and sound when you need it and yet comfortable at highway speeds. At idle, you still have enough rumble to let the other guy know that you've got something cooking under the hood.

Since your going to be keeping the rest of the exhaust stock I would get a muffler a tad louder than flowmaster. The stockers are pretty loud for a stock muffler so I would go with something that will make a difference like FRPP stingers or magnapacks. I don't think flowmasters make a big enough difference over the stock mufflers to even justify the purchase.

If your going to spend money on changing the mufflers you might as well get something you can hear.

I have the stingers along with long tubes/offroad h and my car isn't nearly as loud as some of the others out there.

I have the Ford Racing mufflers on my car (obviously ) and absolutely love the sound. They don't have ANY drone.. they sound amazing when the car starts, and they get a lot of compliments.

I thought about going with Flowmasters, but I have them in my '65...

As far as oil, I first changed mine at 1500 with regular castrol- to let everything break-in, then I changed it again at 4500 to Mobil 1 Synthetic; for both changes, I used 5w-20.

I use synthetic because of the extra protection, and the fact that I can get a few more miles between changes. Also, for 6 quarts it is less than $30 at Walmart..

Congratulations on your new Mustang..! Great looking rag top. As for mufflers, I installed the FlowMasters on my '06 GT for their deep, muscle car rumble. I researched many brands, but FlowMasters seemed to be the choice of many Mustang owners. It was a driveway install for me, very easy to install, and they look great on the car. Have fun with your new ride..!

Hey man, with that kind of car, she'll never let you down. I bought my GT in 06, and it was a tungsten grey one with the red leather interior. LOVE my car.

First congrats on your GT!
For mufflers may I suggest Pypes mid muffler system. Just an idea, it's the muffler system of my choice. Keep us updated on your choice and future mods, it all ways starts somewhere and normally ends up with a 500hp street racer!

Thanks for the complements. I've pretty much decided to go with Borla ovals for the mufflers. That and the new Hurst billet shifter will be my first mods.

One minor change I did this past week was to put yellow halogen bulbs in the fog lights. I also put some red LED wedge bulbs behind the clear side markers in the rear. Other than that I've added the rear mud flaps and some Weathertech floor liners. It's been too cold here to do much else. I'm really looking forward to spring so that I can have some fun with this car.

I've been doing a lot of research on what motor oil to use. I know a lot of people prefer to use the Motocraft syn blend. I've looked at the specs and oil analyses from a lot of oils and the Amsoil 0w20 ASM oil looks to have the best specs, even over Mobil 1.

must be a bunch of us mid life crisis guys out there. doing the math i would say you were born in 56. same year as myself. i got the same car in an 06 model. white gt with the black rag top. love the car. only have 4500 miles on it since i dont care to drive it in the rain or at night. livin in jersey i have had it in the garage since it got cold. the few warm days we have had i end up at work getting out late. my truck knows the way home.

i thought about an exhaust but the stock is not to bad of a sound. i put a k and n cai on it and the exhaust seems to have gotten louder. definetly a change in power.

Yep.

I also use my truck when the sun's not shining. It's an '05 diesel RAM quad cab.
