New Heads or Supercharge the 383?

Yeah believe it or not ive been reading Chevy sites to see what those guys run on their 383 strokers. Its helping. But theres not much 383 Windsor documentation. Easier to find 393. My 383 uses a longer rod...Chevy 6.2 So the Motor should be an awesome revver. The 383 is like the 351 version of a 331.

Not to get too far off topic but how does that work? Longer rod gives you less compression "space" i.e. c.i. than a 393..? .. at least, I am trying to visualize it.. So to get more c.i. you go to a shorter rod? But wouldn't a longer rod mean longer to revv?? .. eh ..er .. shorter rod quicker rev..Sounds contradictory but I am sure there is some scientific methodology there. I dunno.. I just start it and it runs.

Yeah...smaller crank longer rod. Not sure how it works. I heard it has a near perfect rod ratio. I'm no machinist though.

The rod length doesn't really effect compression at all. All that is adjusted with the wrist pin height. All it does is change the rod/stroke ratio, which helps with piston side load. It doesn't really effect the revs either.

The displacement is really not that critical. All the stroke really does is adjust the rpm at which the engine makes max torque and power. IE, a 383 is going to make 400rwhp at 5600rpms whereas a 408 wold make 403rwhp at 5400 rpms. My point is, you can look at your head and cam combinations on 408 engines and so forth, and get a pretty good idea what you can adjust on your engine. Looking at a Ford 408 combination is going to be a lot more helpful than looking at a Chevy 383.

I agree. 408 is going to be your best bet for combo comparison. You can look at mine but between the cubes and the compression , we are a bit off. Whats your goal really?

Thinking about it more.., with your comp ratio,,..hmm...If it we ME.. I would go forced induction on 2nd thought. Why? Because my educated guess could be way off and Stopsign brought it home with the comment - you may only get to 400rwhp NA. Now that's not bad at all, but ME, I would try to get more out of it. I would go for it! You could end up pushing more rwhp than you would ever have NA AND a nice smooth running car. I am going to have to back down to prolly 430rwhp to get that out of my NA man.

It just comes back to the idea that ideally its good to be making the correct power for your combo before you throw boost at it just so you arent bandaiding frustratingly low dyno numbers.

Question. Maybe I missed this, but has it been verified if his low numbers are due to a problem with the build or is it just the fact that the combo isn't very ideal?

No it hasn't. However, with the pro-comps, typoon intake and 351R headers my 414 only put out 338rwhp lol. So take away 31 c.i. and down the compression to 9:1, and 200 something rwhp is right there. Amazing but sheesh, if you dont let it breathe it doesn't matter what size engine you have.

So with that being said, the combo itself is making what it should, correct? If that is the case I really don't think going the blower route is that bad of an idea. I think its going to come down to your personal preference. Do you want a big HP all motor car or a blown car? It's going to make great power either way.

The combo basically sucks in terms of optimizing HP. (I think 383 is aware of that now). However, with a new cam, the pro-comps may work ok with FI. But I dont know anyone with FI thru pro-comps.

yeah my cam is mild...compression is mild and the heads suck at flowing.

So get a cam that is designed for your combination and goals in mind and get a good set of heads. I'd suggest Trickflow High ports or some AFR 225s. Your compression isn't that bad at all.

+1 on the High Ports. If you can squeeze the change go for the Trick Wedge Rs.

I want a head with inline valves in stock locations. Any links to trickflows that can do this??? I enjoy the quietness of my shaft rockers.
