The heat soak may not make a giant difference, but why ignore it? Metal will clearly allow heat to transfer to the intake charge at a faster rate than plastic will allow.
I do agree that at N/A power levels, a CAI isn't helping, plastic or metal.
That air is moving way to fast for heat soak to even matter, if the air was trapped and standing still then yes. CAI, are just for aesthetics, drop in filter and you stock tube. Or you can do the preventitative maitanance mod! Some of the hard stuff you will not need to replace till another 100,000 miles, just food for thought!
Anything is better than the stock garbage.
Run a K&N if you want to clean up the engine bay or JLT if you want the one with the best HP and TQ gain, but, you will be paying more for an extra 1-3 HP and TQ if that..

Alright, so as you guys know, I have a 2003 Mustang GT Convertible Centennial Edition. I drove it up from Florida and it got pretty decent MPG on the highway, about 22 on cruise control the whole way. But in the city and some highway I'm getting pretty bad gas milage, about 8-10MPG, so far I got about 60 miles on a quarter tank ( I filled up the the very neck! ) I was driving conservatively to see how much it would get, the car now has 40K miles. I don't know basically anything about this car since the owner wasn't there when I bought it and couldn't ask any questions ( I bought it from his mother who did the deal) All I know is he probably took it to this shop that they said they get all their cars done at, ( not a great shop fyi.) and he did oil changes with what seemed to me pennzoil. Again, he had the stock g-force tires on it, stock brakes, and everything else stock, (the brake fluid is greenish color, I thought it would be better since the car has low miles). On another note the car has a problem with power, ( I don't get a great throttle response even when I slam the gas. ) it makes a weird sound like somethings shaking, and it has troubles starting sometimes even after driving 15 minutes, parking, and coming out 2 minutes later.
So that seems to be all the problems I've been having with it, I know I wrote a lot but I'm trying to give you guys all the information I got, let me know if you need to know something I left out. Thanks so far! Great forum and help from everyone!
Does it burn oil, how much? Have you changed the spark plugs (do a search on here about it before you do)? The green color in the brake fluid is from the copper in the system corroding and hasn't much to do with miles, but more to do with time. Bleed the brakes. I suggest you make a new thread to address these issues. I would fix all these things before I even began to think about any mods.
If you are looking at cai's,go with JLT.Stay away from metal style ones,they soak heat big time!Metal ones are fine if your the guy that is dragging at the strip where short blasts are fine which doesn't allow the intake tube to get hot,but in the city with stop,and go traffic,the metal tube gets hot,and traps the hot air in the tube.Kinda defeats the purpose of the term cai.
