Hey I got about 1 grand saved up. Syncros are messed up and is hard to shift on stop and go trafic.

My car is not heavely mooded but I will add heads some time soon.

A new T5z is around $1200
A TKO $1600 + plus parts + one heck of a time to adjust (from what I've read here) so i comes to abou $2000

Will a T5z handle the good old HCI, around 300HP to the wheels and
some hard shifting?

I'd never waste money on buying a new T-5 only to worry about it constantly. Save up and buy a real transmission....either the TKO or G-force. Forget about all that T-5 crap.

If i were you, id buy a used t-5, prolly get a nice one for like $400. If your buying new, dont buy a t-5. Deffinetly buy from astro performance, tony is great. I bought the super alloy gearset and had my t-5 rebuilt a couple years ago. Never had a problem with it, but i only put about 2k on it before i sold it.

I am realy thinking about an g-force type rebuild kit with a beefy input shaft upgrade when the time comes...unless I can find a deal on an old school tko or 3550 used.

been researching it alot lately.

good luck with whatever you choose.

I really researched them both..Before making my decision. The t5 with either upgrade the gf or the astro is fine good savings in wieght and money. And its a good upgrade from the t5. But now once you change out the main shaft the cost is up there with the TKO. And you are not benefiting from the features from the TKO trust me the are 2 totally differnent trans. You have an additional 500 dollar upgrade but if you have plans of any more hp go with the tko. But If you have plan of going for 300-350.The gf t-5 w/o the main shaft should be ok. As for me the TKO is A bad trans.

It the same thing as a T5, but rated for slightly more torque, 330TQ, and has a slightly different gear ratio, first gear I think. Is the only transmission you can buy directly from Ford Motorsports catalog, even at the dealers parts shop. The T5 that comes in our cars is supposed to be rated for slightly less torque. Most people say is the same transmission. Just a marketing name.

I have a TKO500 and have to give it a thumbs up. It just depends on how far you plan on taking the engine. You have to know your goals there, before you decide on a tranny. I know I would side on too much capability rather than not enough. Doing anything twice will be more expensive.

How much was your whole setup? I've been reading the threads...
most say under $2000. When I check the websites I see it's more like
$2500. I'm waiting 'till monday to call D&D. Seems to be what everybody
here recomends.

When I did it, it was more than just the tranny. I did a TKO 500, Bell housing, clutch fork, yoke, pro 5.0 shifter, Mcleod Clutch, billet flywheel, Throw out bearing, Aluminum drive shaft, quadrant and cable adjuster, and a new trans mount. It all came out to just under $3000. I probably could have done a little better on prices if I shopped around but I was trying to do it quickly. Also if you don't do it yourself your probably looking around $300 for labor. It's not the cheapest way to go, but the thing feels bullit proof. I'm very happy with the clutch as well, except for the pedal effort (I have another post up right now, I broke the clutch cable today ). If you have big plans for the motor i think it is the way to go. If it's going to be relatively mild, an upgraded T5 will probably do. D&D is a decent place to call since they have pretty good prices on the TKO's (If I did it again I would do the 600). Where the shop used to be is actually about 3 miles down the street from me . Make sure you talk to the owner though, because he just moved out of the industrial park in Santa Clarita to his house to save money. With a tranny it won't be a big deal, but that is what stopped me from ordering a engine from him (No clean room ).

Well I did a bench rebuilt... cost me a whooping $250 for parts and my brother did the job for me. Now I just need a new clutch...

I guess I saved $2750.... the TKO will have to wait.
