I just got my first car its a 88 5.0, I hope I'm putting this in the right place. Well anyways, my car is slow and it sucks. My friend has a 93(might be a 94) Honda Civic and its faster and still gets better gas mileage. What do I do?

He told me some stuff that I should do but I'm not sure where to get this stuff? He said Cold Air intake, cat back exhaust(said a muffler would help the same), some wheels and low pro tires so I get better traction, a Stage 5 clutch, and a few other things. I'm not sure if hes right or not, he said something about a carbon Fiber hood would also take off some weight. I just know I need it to be faster. I work at Taco Bell so I don't have a lot of money but I do want to save up for naws, I think that would make it a lot faster. Now Ive heard that a wing doesn't do anything on a front wheel drive car, but would it help with mine since its rear wheel drive? Thank you for any help you can offer.

Oh boy... Well, the first thing I'd do would be to disregard any advice on go-fast parts given to you by a ricer with a honda civic. Your car is 21 years old, the first thing you should do is change all of the fluids, distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires, and fuel filter. Replace any worn suspension bushings. You'd be surprised the difference some standard maintenance and freshening up will do.

Once you get the car reliable and running right, get a K&N drop in filter and remove the air silencer from the air box. A cold air intake on a stock motor is a waste of money. After that you should look into full-length subframe connectors, and a better breathing exhaust (i.e. shorty or long tube headers, H or X pipe and some good mufflers). Then get a rear end rebuild with gears to wake the car up acceleration-wise. Once you're on top of all of that post again and we'll talk about making some real power, and ways to get the car to hook and handle. :nice:

"NAWSSSSSSSS" is a good way to blow your tired, stock engine up and have you bumming rides in your friends riced out civic real fast. :(

I'm guessing your car is a 5 speed since you said "stage 5 clutch" earlier?

Your tranny does not need to be modified with a rear end rebuild, they're two completely separate mechanisms. Now, if your tranny is grinding or not acting properly, then a rebuild is in order!

How about a couple pics of the car and maybe an under hood shot.

Maintenance is a great start and gears will get you out of the hole faster. Now some long tubes with an off road h or x pipe (depends what sound you want) with a set of Flowmasters will help it breath better. A cam swap with a MAF conversion will offer a significant HP increase.
Beyond that heads and cam and/or a supercharger are the next HP upgrades. :nice:

Just all depends on your budget. Also for clutches I prefer Centerforce because they clamp great and don't have a heavy pedal.

x1001.
Excellent advice.

+1 on what 1991notchbackLX said. change the fluid and tune up, full exhaust (headers, h or x and a cat back setup) and gears will wake it up. You don't have to buy all this stuff at once, do it in steps, make a progress thread, do the tune up one weekend then the exhaust another. as for your buddy, every time he opens his yap about how his is faster just know that yours looks better!

Best advice, ever! :nice:

Low profile tires generally increase traction when turning (less sidewall deflection), but decrease straightline traction for the same reason. Birds and planes have wings, cars have spoilers. You have one from the factory. :) You already have a fiberglass hood, so you wouldn't see, really any advantage by going with a carbon fiber hood. That's a quick way to waste a lot of money for maybe a few more pounds over the fiberglass, honestly. What in the hell is a stage 5 clutch? Anything more than a standard replacement, or maybe something a step or two up, such as a Ford Racing King Cobra clutch would be a waste of money. You're at a low enough power level that you don't need that much clamping power out of a clutch. If your current clutch isn't slipping, or worn out, it would be money better spent elsewhere. Nitrous (not naws View attachment 253359 ) is a good way to increase power, when used properly. 1991notchbackLX's advice is good. I would do all of that, then post up with what type of budget that you have and we could go from there.

I know this car! Were you banned before? I know earlier this year or at the end of last year you posted this car and had all kinds of problems. What was your old user name?

Ive never been on here before.

For someone who knows nothing about modifying Fords you seem to have a 302 intake lower sitting next to the green chair!!!

I personally call BS at this point. But out of boredom ill entertain it.

Chris

It came with the car.
