New to the drag -- Wheels/Tires Question

The other weekend I went to watch some drag racing, and the next day I had the itch to try it out... well now I'm hooked. I want to get a rear set of drag tires. I was looking into getting a set of wheels to mount them on as well. I don't mind the swapping on race day. Someone told me to check out the M/T ET Streets, so I did some reading up and thought why not? Well I can't find a wheel to put them on! Does anything think theres a problem with the ET Street, LT 26 x 11.5-16, Bias-Ply, Blackwall? If not, could someone point me in the right direction of the wheel I should be looking into? I was never too good with wheels/tires. Thanks!

I run 255/50/16 M/T ET Street Drag Radials on my 05 GT using 05 V6 Mustang 16" Rims. I haven't tried the M/T ET Streets that you are looking at, but they will fit the V6 rims. If I was to do it again, I would have gone with the 275/40/17 M/T ET Street Drag Radial.

Won't I need a wider wheel since the tires I'm looking at are 11.5" wide? The stock V6 wheels are only 7" wide, aren't they?

I would go with the 275/40 17 also. You could mount them on stock 17" wheels. I don't see a need for the 11.5. Guys are running super fast on 10.5s

You are correct that tire won't fit a 16" V6 Rim. You need an 8" wide rim at the minimum. Personally, you don't need it that wide. Either go with the 10.5" ET Street on the V6 16" Rim or with the 275/40/17 ET Street Drag on a stock 17" Rim.

275/40's on stock rims, will that tire even mount up? I am searching for two rims (lighter than stock I hope) and some sticky slicks myself. Where does everyone buy theirs and what are you running?

The 275/40/17 will fit the 8" Bullitt rim. I have been told that the 26/11.5/17 ET Street will also fit the stock 8" rim. When I go to the track, I run the 26/11.5/17 on 9" Bullitt rims that I got from American Muscle.

I've got a set of 255/60/15's (MT ET Street Radials) on a set of 15x7 V6 wheels and although they do bulge a little, they fit just fine.

I am told you will need to relocate the rear sway bar in order for the 15" wheels to work on an S197, but otherwise it's cake.

And in my experience, these tires hook really well. I was clocking in high 1.8 60ft times with an open diff (1-wheel working) in my '96 Mercury Cougar...and I'm seeing over 360lbs ft of torque at the wheels by 2,000RPM.

Just remember that to pass the tech inspection with any aftermarket wheel, you need longer wheels studs and open end lugnuts. If you stay with a stock type ford wheel you can run the studs on your car.

I bought a pair of 17x9" Saleen replica wheels (for S197's) from AmericanMuscle.com for $114.99 each and free shipping! Then ordered a pair of BFG 275/40/17 Drag Radials. They hook up awesome with just a quick spin in the water box. My factory 18" fanblade wheels and factory tire s weigh 54 lbs each corner, while these Saleen replica wheels and larger 275 tires are just 48 lbs each corner, so I saved 12 lbs of rotational mass and have awesome traction.

is this true with any aftermarket wheels, or just drag wheels? like if i had aftermarket saleen replicas or bullitt wheels or something from steeda as opposed to weld wheels or bogarts or something? thanks!

Saleen is a vehicle manufactuer so the Saleen wheels are a stock type wheel. Weld or Bogart are aftermarket and need the long studs. If the wheels are replica bulletts or saleens most tech guys may not even notice, but it's kinda a grey area, so if your cool to the tech guy he'll be cool with you.

thanks, i havent been to the track yet, may actually be going today, and i wasnt sure since i have aftermarket wheels on my car. so basically be careful with anything that didnt come on the car stock.
