Hey guys I'm new here and have a few questions. I have a friend that just purchased a 65 coupe and I am helping him restore it. I have quite a bit of car knowledge but it mostly covers the Chevy (I know that's a bad word here :D ) side of things.
I'll start easy though. We are building a 302 for the car and I need some place I can get info on what engine and heads are what. I have a 302 out of a 68 Mustang ( I think) that I gave him but he has another set of heads and I want to use the best ones.
The car currently has a 6 cyl. in it and he wants to drive the car untill we get the V-8 done but we need a carb for it. Any place you guys would recommend for a good used carb? He doesn't want to blow alot of $$$ on a carb that is only going to be used for a few months.
Thanks for all you help and I'm sure I'll be asking a bunch of stupid questions as we tackle this project.

need a carb for the 6 banger? or the 8? i bought mine for my 289 from advance auto. was like 350 bux for a holley 600 cfm 4bbl.
check ebay for used ones. i would suggest a rebuid kit for it tho (like maybe 10 bux)

Welcome to Stangnet.....even if you do wear a bow-tie!;)

If you're planning the engine swap, do a search on this forum on the topic. It is quite a bit more involved than taking out one engine and dropping in the other. To do it right you HAVE TO upgrade the entire suspension and steering to the V8 specs!

I would also recommend upgrading the brakes, not necessarily to discs right away, but replace the old "fruit jar" single chamber MC for a dual chamber MC.....I bought a new one for a '67, it is a straight bolt in swap. The only thing I had to do to make it work was use an adjustable pushrod.:nice:

Welcome aboard! If you are talking about stock heads, the 68 are pretty good. Stay away from anything made around 73 to 84. 65 Stanger is right about the suspension; pre 1967 cars used a weaker suspension on the 6 cyl. cars than the 8's. 67 on, everything was the same except for the spindles out on the front. In other words, he has tackled an expensive project. Another way to look at is all of theold suspension probably needed to be replaced anyway so what the heck. Back to the heads, if he can swing it there are a bunch of great aftermarket aluminum heads that wake these engines up like you wouldn't believe! Bring on the questions!

Thanks for the answers guys. I wasn't aware that the supsension upgrade was a must I thought it was just a good idea. The carb he needs is the one barrel for the 6 banger. He wasnts to drive it untill we do the swap and now with having to upgrade the suspension he will get more driving time while we gathers all the parts needed. Is it true that you can use parts from the Fairmont for this swap?
I'm going to head to the search funtion and do some reading...

He can get a rebuilt one from Autozone for about $115 or a used one from a Falcon, Ranchero, or any other car of that era with an inline 6, but it will probably have problems too. A rebuild kit is very cheap and easy to perform on a one barrel. F.Y.I, there were two inline six cylinders used; a 170 and a 200 c.i.

Wecome! Regarding stock heads...

The 289 heads had the smallest combustion chambers, the best ones had screw-in studs and factory "guide-plates" (they were actually slotted in the casating), but those are getting rare.

Early 302 heads are better than late ones but that narrows your search considerably.

Early 351W heads will bolt right in (with the correct studs or you can have the block machines to accept the larger bolts/studs), these have larger valves than 289/302 heads.

The aftermarket has far surpassed what was available in 1965-1975 though. You can buy new aluminum heads from Ford (like the GT40 models) or you can get some Edelbrock/Trick-Flow/AFR heads that will destroy anything you'll ever see from porting the stock heads. These are relatively cheap when you consider paying someone to rebuild and port/polish the stock heads.
